Match 35
17th February 1996
Cambridge U (h)

Saturday 17th February 1996

Third Division

EXETER CITY 1
CAMBRIDGE UNITED 0

It was a late, late show by Exeter City as they scored the winning goal deep into injury time, just when the game seemed set for another draw. There was even a dispute over who actually got the goal, with Noel Blake's goalbound flick from Mark Came's shot, being helped into the net by Leon Brathwaite. It matters not who scored though, for these were three very valuable points for the Grecians to take them back into the top half of the table.

Came was in outstanding form as he marshalled former City striker Robbie Tumer. And although this was much better game than the one earlier in the week against Mansfield. City should really have scored a lot earlier than they did.

After a fairly even first half, City had locked liveler in attack in the secord, although it was United who almost broke the deadlock when the ball cannoned to safety off the legs at a diving Peter Fox.

The winning goal was timed as being in the 94th minute, the amount of stoppage time being added on by the referee greatly angering the United team.
