The Grecians played some of their best football of season in a highly entertaining match against promotion chasing Colchester United. It was the visitors who took the lead after six minutes through Gus Caesar, who pounced to force home a loose ball after a fierce shot from Mark Kinsella rebounded off the chest of Peter Fox.

City hit back almost immediately and were soon back on terms. Chris Myers won a a strong challenge on the half way line and the ball broke forward for Leon Braithwaite to latch onto. His pace took him away from the visitors defence and he planted an angled shot low into the net past the advancing Carl Emberson.

Exeter showed plenty of adventure and deservedly took the lead in the 25th minute when Braithwaite chased another lost cause, took the ball off Caesar passed to Danny Bailey, and the City midfielder swept a cross toward the far post where Mark Chamberlain had the simple task of running the ball into the net. City had a good opportunity to score a third when John Sharpe diverted Braithwaite's cross wide of an empty net.

Braithwaite was showing his best overall form since signing for the club and was constantly causing problems for the Colchester defence. Chamberlain too, was showing glimpses of the sort of form that won him intemational recognition early in his career with an excellent all round display

Colchester desperate to gain something from the match if their promocion hopes were not to be denied, obviously had a talking too during the half-time break and they showed much more determination at the start of the second half as they continually pushed Exeter back.

Fox made three excellent saves from Karl Duguid, Tony Adcock and Scott McGleish as Colchester sought an equaliser. The final 20 minutes proved to be an open attacking game with Exeter also having their moments in the apposing penalty area Richard Pears hit a spectacular overhead kick just wide, whilst Braithwaite had a shot superbly turned away by Emberson after an instinctive pass from Pears tell perfectly into his path

Exeter certainly deserved three points to cap an excellent afternoon but it was Colchester who had thehalf as they continually pushed Exeter Back

Exeter certainly deserved three points to cap an excellent afternoon but it was Colchester who had the last say as far as goals were concerned.

Adcock used his speed to outrun Noel Blake and pulled a cross back for McGleish who glanced the ball into the City net via the post with Fox flat looted

Exeter still pressed forward and had one further chance of winning the game when Chamberlain, received a pass from Adrian Foster, found himself in space, only to have his shot blocked by the outstretched foot of Emberson, the ball running for a comer.

Gary Rice made a break down the left and ended with a fierce shot which fizzed into the sidenetting. There was no denying that this had been one of City's best, it not best. performance at St James Park this season, and this was rellected in the applause from the Exeter supporters when the final whistle sounded

A first goal for Mark Chamberlain's goal last Saturday was the first for Exeter City since he joined the club last Summer

It was however, the 65th of his League career. Mark has scored 17 for Port Vale, 17 for Stoke City, & for Sheffield Wednesday, 20 for Portsmouth and 2 for Brighton and Hove Albion
