BBC match report –
Bury danger man Jon Newby made one goal and scored the other as his side boosted their hopes of gaining a play-off position with a crucial victory at Exeter.
But defeat for the home side, who threatened to get back into the game in the second period, left them in even deeper relegation trouble.
Midway through the first half former Liverpool striker Newby produced a pinpoint cross for Chris Billy to slide home his fourth goal of the season.
Minutes later Newby dispossessed defender Graeme Power and calmly rifled the ball home to claim his first goal in 18 appearances.
Exeter pulled one back just after the restart when Andy Roscoe's cross was headed in by striker Steve Flack - his 11th of the campaign.
Phillip Baker came on for the injured Chris Curran midway through the second period and the change nearly paid dividends late in the game, but his header sailed over the bar from Roscoe's corner.
Gary Peters' men remain rooted to the foot of the table and three points from safety, with only five games remaining.
