Fox unconvinced by Exeter's rare victory

Carlisle United 1 Exeter City 3.

Saturday 2 January 1999

Referee: M Pike

Att: 3340

EXETER manager Peter Fox admitted: "We'll still get out-classed in this league, and we'll have to battle for results."But he was delighted with the 3-1 win over Carlisle that ended his club's dismal record of 31 away games without a win.

Said Fox: "We've lost six away games by just 1-0 and we deserved a bit of luck." Exeter were ahead on 16 minutes. A Chris Fry ball found Jon Richardson, who pulled it back from the byline and Jason Rees was on the spot to hammer a shot past keeper Tommy Calg. Carlisle's equalised in the 24th minute when McGregor flicked the ball to Doble. The big striker from 25 yards out coolly lofted the ball over keeper Ashley Bayes. The home team's joy was short-lived. A minute later Jimmy Carter's pass found Chris Holloway (photo) in front of goal and his 10-yard shot sailed past Caig. Carlisle paid the price for pushing upfield when Quailey sent Steve Flack away in the 86th minute for the third goal.
