Fitzgerald, from the 1st Devon's played for Exeter City in the Plymouth and District League before the club turned professional in 1908.

Making his first team debut against Topsham in the first league fixture of the season on 16 September 1905, he played twice more that season in a three-match first-team career in which he played in different positions each time. He had played full back for the whites in the public practice on the 2nd September. And played a number of games for the 2nd X1 throughout 1905/06.
