TAVISTOCK Byrne,

The match under Association rules took place at St James's Park before a fair attendance, Exeter kicked off, and Byrne and Carter going well away, took the leather to the visitors quarters. The Tavistock forwards got going, and at one time looked likely to score, but Carey cleared for Exeter with a good kick, Play for some time was close to the visitors goal, Byrne, Smith and Carter putting in some clever work, Carter tried a shot at goal, but the ball went wide, Exeter opened the scoring through Tompkins, who put the ball through the posts after Carter had made a fine dribble and passed to Smith, On the kick off Tavistock pressed, and Warren put in a lovely shot for goal, which was successfully negotiated by Grassby. Play was for a time in the Exonians quarter, but by some excellent work, the leather was transferred to the other end, where Smith put in a shot which was too much for the Tavistock goalkeeper, and another point was registered in favour of Exeter, Tavistock having two goals against them, continued to play well, and gave plenty of work to Littlehales and Carey, who were, however, equal to the occasion, Carter with another splendid dribble came right through and scored Exeter's 3rd goal. Carter was immediately dangerous for Exeter in the 2nd half, and the Tavistock Backs had to kick to touch to clear their lines, Carter would have scored anothergoal, but for the fact that one of the visiting team handled the ball and was penalised, Nothing came of the free kick, Davey dribbled finely, but his progress was impeded through one of the visiting backs kicking the ball out of the field, Smith and Byrne scored for Exeter and then Tavistock got goal,

In bad weather, Exeter kicked off, and nearly scored early on, but Paignton recovered and kept the play near to the Exeter line for some time, Following the award of a free kick, Carter scored for the home team, and the lead was increased by Smith, Yet another goal was scored for Exeter, and although Paignton played up well, they had no luck when it came to shooting. In a quick Paignton attack, the ball was sent in hard towards goal, but Grassby fisted it over the bar in fine style. A corner was forced by Exeter, from which Hewitt scored the 4th goal, then Byrne after a fine dribble added the 5th, Straight from the restart Exeter sent the ball flying up the field, scoring another goal, and soon after this the game had to be stopped owing to one of the Paignton men being knocked out. The visitors showed good combination in the 2nd half, but could not do anything near goal, and Smith scored again for the Exonians. In the closing stages Exeter scored an 8th goal.

Before a large attendance, Colonel Miln-Holm started the ball for the Exeter team. They attacked, but were repulsed with comparative ease. Two shots were put in, but each time the ball went behind the goal, Thurless who was playing in goal for Exeter, made a good save from the Plymouth forwards, Tricky dribbling by Exeter, forced play to the other end, and Davey from a corner made a fine shot, the ball hitting the bar. After being on the defensive for a moment or so, Exeter again took the play to the other end, and a goal was only just missed by Carter. Carter, with a flying shot hit the bar, and this time from the rebound, Byrne put the ball through, Tompkins was responsible for a good piece of dribbling, but the general run of play was towards the home goal, the line being more than once in danger, One shot went narrowly over the Exeter bar, but the defence prevailed, and at half time Exeter led by 1-0, The Right Worshipful, the Mayor of Exeter (photo) started the 2nd half, Home Park again put the ball over the Exeter goal, and the home team after taking the ball right down the field, were driven back, Home Park scoring through a mistake by one of the Backs, Plymouth now dictated the course of the game, and after sending over the crossbar yet again, and after Thurless had successfully saved several shots, Two goals were scored,. The game thus ending in favour of Home Park by 3-1.

This match attracted a large attendance, Exeter kicked off and quickly assumed the offensive, but erratic shooting and an excellent defence prevented them from scoring more than twice. The crowd was afforded much amusement by the tricky play of the Exeter forwards and Halfbacks, Exeter led 2-0 at half time, In the 2nd half Bampton rarely crossed the half way line, and Exeter scored five more goals,

Scorers
EXETER Byrne, Carter, Hewitt 2.
DEVONS Grubb 2, Roberts,

The Regiment kicked off, and appeared likely to score straight away, but Exeter brought the ball up the field, and after some smart forward play Davey shot past from a narrow angle, Fletcher put in a straight shot but the ball went over, and another drive by Byrne was equally futile. Davey who had previously been off colour, and Fletcher tried a couple of shots each, then at the other end a corner was gained by the Regiment, the ball going mere inches over the bar, Play then went again to the other end, and Carter made a short pass to Byrne, who put the ball neatly through the posts. Another attempt by Hewitt resulted in the ball hitting the top of the bar. In one of their bursts of quick dribbling, the Regiment carried the ball to the Exeter goal, and Colour Sergeant Grubb scored. A free kick for fouling was awarded Exeter about midfield, and from the corner kick Carter scored, The visitors pressed hard at the commencement of the 2nd half, and Colour Sergeant Grubb scored quickly, after one of the best bits of play seen during the afternoon, This equalised the score, but Hewitt almost immediately put through cleverly for Exeter, Further goals were obtained by Hewitt for Exeter, and Roberts for the Regiment,

SATURDAY 29th DECEMBER 1894,

POSTPONED,

Exeter and Plymouth Argyle were to have tried conclusions at St James's Park today. At the time arranged for the kick off (3 p.m.) most of the Exonians were in attendance, but the Argyle had not arrived, The players waited until 3.30 p.m., as also did a fair number of the local population, who were present in the hope of seeing a good game, but after a while the players and spectators were informed that the match would not take place. No communication of any kind was received by the Exeter club as to the non-appearance of the Argyle,

The subsequent play was of an even character, but just before half time, Tavistock scored two goals, the 2nd from a corner. Exeter played down the hill in the 2nd half, but Tavistock scored two more goals, and when the Exonians counter attacked, they were unable to break down the home defence.

Scorer DAWLISH Lamacraft,

Good play was out of the question, the ground being like a swamp, following the recent thaw, Lamacraft scored for Dawlish after 5 minutes, and the lead was retained by the visitors until the interval. The Dawlish Backs were good in defence, and held out against continious pressure by Exeter in the 2nd half, Truscott was a good player for Exeter, who were a man short throughout.

Exeter were at last able to play a game, after 4 weeks, when virtually all football in the County of Devon was cancelled, owing to the snow, heavy frosts and grounds freezing over. Exeter should have played Tavistock today, but this was cancelled, and a match with the Exeter Training College was arranged instead. At the commencement, the game was mainly in the College territory, and Carter narrowly missed heading the ball through, while a kick by Calvert went just over. The College, though lacking combination, hustled their way through by speed more than once, and after a near miss, actually scored the first goal. It was not until well into the 2nd half that the City equalised. They had been attacking for some little time, when Davey passed to Carter, who scored from a position right in front of goal, The game was of a fast and interesting character.

There being no other match of importance in the City, the number of spectators far exceeded expectations, Hevitt kicked off for the Exonians, but the Regiment intercepted, and set up an attack of their own, which was stopped by Littlehales. Both teams were playing a fine game, and each Citadel in turn was pressed, Hewitt indulging in some of his tricky play, beat the visiting custodian and scored the first goal for Exeter,

In the 2nd half a corner was given to Exeter, and Davey, by a fine kick sent the ball right to the front of the goal. A slight struggle took place, and Exeter scored amid great applause and ries of "Keep it up Exeter". Somerset were then awarded a free kick for hands from which they scored. The game had to be momentarily stopped through one of the visiting players kicking the ball onto the railway line, Somerset continued to have the advantage, and Carey in trying to kick clear, got in the way of Thurless, and the ball went into the Exeter goal, the scores were now even, Not long afterwards the Regiment, by a splendid effort got through again and scored a 3rd goal. The spectators told Exeter to "Play up" and they did. The ball being taken down the field for one of the home forwards to score. The excitement in the closing stages was intense, with each goal being visited in turn,
