The Season 1895-1896,
Exeter Association

SATURDAY 23rd NOVEMBER 1895.

ROYAL ARTILLERY 1. EXETER 1,

Scorers
Royal Artilley:- Price,
Exeter:- Langmead,

Exeter played their first game of the season at the Artillery field, being without two of their Halfbacks, Tompkins and Duncalf. In the first half Exeter played with the wind against them, but within 10 minutes of the start, Langmead scored for the City side, after taking the ball at least half the length of the field in a long dribble. The game was mainly in favour of the soldiers, who however, could not score until well into the 2nd half, when a determined rush was made and Price goaled. The inceptive revival of the Association game in Exeter is welcomed, although today's exhibition was inauspicious. Play was very late in beginning, owing to the incorrect announcement in a local newspaper, whereby players and spectators were seduced out to St James's Park in error, when the game commenced at Topsham Barracks, the field was not flagged properly. Exeter's ranks appeared to be recruited by two soldiers, one Back, and the other in goal, the latter being very trusty and useful,

The home team made several attempts at goal, and Knowlman scored, The ball was again put in motion and Gunner Pryce for the Artillery put it through the posts, In the 2nd half, Gunner Elvington scored for the Artillery, and 8 minutes before time, another goal was scored for the soldiers,

TRAINING COLLEGE 1,

Scorers
EXETER Swan, Laing,
COLLEGE Thomas,

No little interest was centred in this encounter, and there was a big crowd present. The ground was in a slippery condition, but nevertheless, the game at times was really brilliant, Both teams played with great pluck and determination, but the whistle sounded for the interval with nothing scored, Exeter drew first blood in the 2nd half, when Swan sent in a shot past the College goalkeeper, Nothing daunted the Collegians by superior movement managed to work through to the Exeter preserves, and by a splendid effort, Thomas was able to equalise, Exeter then went at it for all they were worth, and gave a notable exhibitiion, their forwards being especially prominent. For the 2nd time the College custodian was beaten, this time the point being notched by Laing.

SATURDAY 28th MARCH 1896.

EXETER TRAINING COLLEGE 0,
EXETER 0,

Before a good number of spectators, the game was a fast one throughout, and Exeter had decidedly the best of it, but mainly owing to the boisterous wind, accurate shooting was very difficult, and in fact almost impossible, and the game ended in a pointless draw.
