Exeter United played their first game of the season at St James's Park. The Collegians kicked off towards the roadway, Roberts received the ball and put in a smart dribble along the touchline, but when he ent across in front of the College goal. Watts kicked out, Roberts opened the scoring for Exeter heading well into the net, following a corner, but after Sutton had saved one shot, he was beaten by another one from Edgehill, and yet another from Warren, Exeter equalised through Roberts and then went ahead through Victor who dribbled right through from the half way. The opening of the 2nd half shattered the hopes of the parties who follow the fortune of the United, for it was seen that they had quite run themselves out in the first portion of the game. The College assumed the upper hand at once, and scored a goal through Warren, Nugent added another and then Warren shot through again, Although they broke away occasionally, Exeter lacked the combination of the College X1, who slowly worked their way back toExeter's end again to enable Edgehill and Rowe to score two more goals. This brought the College score up to 7, and it was not long before Nugent had increased it to 9. Although so badly beaten the United played a good game throughout, a feature being the fine defence of Hogan and Luke. Roberts was a very smart forward along the touchline, and made many excellent openings,

DAWLISH 0,
Morrish; Lammacraft, Knapman; Holman, Leaman, Cousens; Knight, Dart, Simmonds, Richards, McNullen,

At St James's Park before a fair gate, Exeter United's centre forward was H.F.Lunn, a Cambridge University and Suffolk County player, while Dawlish also brought a representative team, Exeter kicked off and the ball found touch on the half way line. From the throw in the United made progress for a short time, Horner just missing the posts. Lunn initiated a pretty piece of dribbling, which broke down when Lamacraft kicked out to neutral territory. The United kept up the pressure and Victor shot a smart goal. Roberts several times got the ball on the wing, but either failed to centre or kicked too hard, Victor with a shot and Lunn with a header tried hand to score for United in the 2nd half but Morrish handed out each time. Lunn then sent wide and Victor too high, after cautioning for fouling the Referee ordered him off the field. Neither side could improve their position, Exeter United holding on to their lead.

SATURDAY 26th OCTOBER 1901,

EXETER UNITED 2, St DAVID'S 1,

SATURDAY 2nd NOVEMBER 1901,

ROYAL ARTILLERY 5, (Og, Watkinson 3, Neill)
Gilmore; Chester, Hayne; Griffiths, Street, Glenman; Donaldson, Ogden, Watkinson, Corriac, Neill,

EXETER UNITED 0,
Bolley; Ashford, Luke; Hogan, Thorpe, Coates; Victor, Kirby, Horner, Roberts, Jesty.

This match was originally intended to have been a League fixture between the United and the 119th and 121st Batteries, but as the Artillery wishedit to be friendly contest, they fielded a full Brigade team on the ground at Topsham Barracks, however, the United Captain, Luke, said he should claim the match as a league one, The United started, and Jesty took the ball well into the enemy camp with agood long kick, Ogden replied with an effort which put the play back into the Exeter half, and Horner cleared, Kirby and Horner had good efforts saved by Gilmore, and for the Artillery Corriac had hard luck in not scoring. At the start of the 2nd half the Artillery immediately attacked vigerously, and it was mainly Corriac who initiated their moves, but a general lack of combination among the soldiers prevented a score, Luke and Bailey relieved Bolley of a good deal of defensive work, although the play of most of the others of the United team was not much above average. Jesty, who did not have many chances on the wing in the first half, was now put in the centre, but he was obviously handicapped by a severe injury to his knee, Another attack was initiated by Corriac, and Bolley attempted to fist out, but the ball hit Luke's back and bounced into the net. This was the beginning of the end for Exeter United, for within a very few minutes, Watkinson had added another goal, and Neill then scored a 3rd. A penalty was given against the United for an alleged foul, which enabled Watkinson to notch the 4th point, and shortly before the finish Watkinson headed the 5th goal.

Scorers
Exeter Harvey, Hogan, Horner, Tyte, Harrison,
Mermagen's X1 Mermagen 2, Griffiths,

The match was played at St James's Park in thick driving rain, which made the game an uncomfortable one players and spectators alike. The ground in some places was several inches deep in mud, Early in the game the Crediton team astonished their opponents by scoring twice. This woke Exeter up to the fact that they were playing an eleven of stronger composition than they supposed. Accordingly the United played with increased vigour, which they kept up through the rest of the game. The score at the end of the first half was two all, Harvey and Hogan having registered goals for Exeter and Mermagen both for the Crediton team, Before the close of play, Exeter's final score was augmented by Horner, Tyte and Harrison. Horner played a particularly fine game, and Ashford (L,W,) and Bolley (Goal) also gave a good account of themselves, Griffiths scored for Crediton in the last few minutes.

SATURDAY 1st MARCH 1902.
At St James's Park,

EXETER UNITED 2, (Horner, Wallage,)
Payne; Ashford, Fein; Harvey, Hogan, Bam, field; Roberts, Wallage, Tyte, Griffiths, Horner,

DAWLISH 2, (Hawkins 2,)
Lake; Knapman, Woodley; Holman, Cousins, Leaman; Hockaday, Robins, Hawkins, Simmonds, Richards,

The United were not up to full strength, Luke, Bolley, Jesty and Harrison, not being able to turn out for various reasons, Dawlish brought a fully representative eleven. Owing to the recent rain, the ground was in a very sloppy condition. Dawlish won the toss, and played with the sun at their backs, and when Bamfield took the play into their half, Knapman cleared with a long kick. Horner then got away and dribbled the ball half the length of the field, taking play right into the mouth of the goal, and in the scramble which followed the ball litterally bounced into the net, and the first goal for the United was scored, Hawkins equalised with a rather lucky goal, the ball striking the bottom of the crossbar and going into the net, After Horner had had a good shot saved by the goalkeeper and a shot by Roberts had travelled over the bar, Wallage put through from close up. Although the United had by far the better of the game in the 2nd half, they were unable to score, Roberts was very clever at keeping the ball from going over the touchline, but here, as a rule, his cleverness ended, Horner on the other wing, gave a brilliant display, centreing to perfection, and always getting the better of Holman, but his work was largely wasted through the inability of the other forwards to shoot straight, Eventually combined play by Dawlish resulted in Hawkins getting the equalising goal,

SATURDAY 8th MARCH 1902,

EXETER UNITED 0,

DEVON REGIMENT 1, (Taylor)
Daw; Edworthy, Iles; Ching, Morrison, Kift; Emery, Taylor, Heath, Roberts, Youlden.

The Devons started down the hill, and with the wind in their favour, but the United were the first to become dangerous, Tyte almost scoring in the opening minute, From a free kick Hogan put in a hard shot, but Daw fisted out, The game was a fast one, and the United were on the whole a much better side, It was evident that the Referee (a soldier) had only an elementary knowledge of the game, for his decisions as regards fouling, were unique, and goalkicks, free kicks and corners were given with great impartiality to the Depot, Play became almost farcical in the 2nd half, for every time the United got the better of the opposition they were stopped by the Referee for an infringement of some mythical rule, not to be found in the Association code. Playing in front of the United goal, Emery put in a drive which Bolley fisted out, but before the goalkeeper could get back to his position Taylor obtained possession and scored a very easy goal,

The teams met at the Magdalen Road field, and the United opened the scoring through Kemble, and the Training College afterwards notched their initial point from a corner off Fein, Then Powe scored from an apparent offside position, the Referee allowing the goal, Warren added another goal for the College.

SATURDAY 22nd MARCH 1902,

EXETER UNITED 3, (Horner,Jesty,Tyte)
Bolley; Fein, Luke; Hogan, Bailey, Wallage; Victor, Ashford, Tyte, Jesty, Horner,
DEVON DEPOT 1, (Roberts)
Daw; Pynne, Edworthy; Harrison, Ching, Kift; Emery, Roberts, Lake, Heath, Youlden, Scorers Exeter Devons,

Played at the Hoopern Field, this game proved to be very even, and from the spectators point of view an enjoyable one. Play commenced with the wind in favour of the soldiers, though they scarcely made use of it, their kicking being poor, and their combination non existent. The 'United, true to their title, were quick to make capital out of their opponents defects, Their forwards came swooping down the field, the obedient leather bounding from toe to toe until it reached Horner, who distinguished himself throughout the whole course of the game, he dodged his opponent in splendid fashion, then with a magnificent kick sent the ball precisely through from the far corner of the Depot's goal, In the 2nd half it was palpable that the soldiers were in a better shape than they had been previously. Once or twice they swept over the green sward and gave Bolley some warm work, but this player aquited himself pluckily and saved his team more than one goal, After about 20 minutes Jesty added another goal to Exeter's score. Perhaps the finest and certainly the most sensational of the goals was the 3rd, it was the culmination of a brilliant and powerful bout of passing from their own goal to their opponents and Tyte was the instrument of the score. Ashford added the remaining one in the United's total. For the Devon depot team the only scorer was Roberts, a very swift shot, and from too close quarters to be effectually checked by Bolley, Fein must be mentioned as exhibiting exceptionally fine play at back, he was utterly unpassable, as the soldiers discoveredto their cost.

SATURDAY 5th APRIL 1902,
DAWLISH 3.
EXETER UNITED 1,

SATURDAY 12th APRIL 1902,

St DAVID'S 1, (Coles)
Hutchinson; Wilkinson, Maunder; Cury, Berry, Julians; Coles, Eveleigh, Westaway, Bates, Smeath.

EXETER UNITED 3. (Tyte 3)
Bolley; Luke, Fein; Hogan, Bailey, Bamfield; Ashford, Jesty, Tyte, Horner, Hookway.

Played at the St David's ground, Marsh Barton, Tyte scored for the United within 10 minutes of the start, St David's though hard pressed at times, defended with great spirit. Towards half time they scored a goal through Coles, who had the good fortune to put the ball between the posts with a shot that was undoubtedly intended to be a centre. The United although the stronger and faster team, wasted many chances through lack of initiative, their forwards failing to rush the ball through by being contented to stand aimlessly by and allowing the Saints to clear their lines and feed their own forwards. In comparison with their strength St David's played much more sprightly and a pointful game. Tyte accounted for the two remaining goals which brought the score up to 3-1.
