The teams indulged in a friendly match on the field adjoining the Higher Barracks. The few spectators who watched the game could from the nature of the play easily percieve that this was the first game of the season for both teams. The conditions were by no means favourable for a good exhibition of the Association game. There was drizzling rain throughout the afternoon and the grass was exceedingly slippery. The marked lack of control over the leather was painfully apparent, The Saints were not at full strength, and the Regiment started off with the slope in their favour, they had little difficulty in confing the ball to the visitors territory. Soon after the start Robinson wastried, but saved well on two or three occasions, After some struggling play in midfield the Army made a pretty hot combined attack and Louchamn not che the first goal of the game, The visitors then showed more vigour, and mainly through the exertions of the Left wing a corner was forced. The Regiment's forwards got possession from the kick out and quickly transferred the game to the other end of the field, displaying some promising passing en route, Heath spoiled the foray by kicking too hard, With the pressure being continued, Burgoyne added a 2nd goal for the Devon Regiment a few minutes before the call of half time. Immediately on resuming the soldiers forced Robinson to handle several times and the onslaught culminated in Johnson putting through. A fast rush down the slope by the St Sidwell's forwards only resulted in a goal kick which the Devons improved on advantageously, the leather being forced through for the 4th time after a melee outside the St Soidwell goal. Uninteresting play followed, and the judgement of both elevens was hopelessly at fault, The Devons got unaccountably slack, and on three occasions towards the close of the game the visiting forwards took them unawares, and scored thrice through Eveleigh,

In the match played at the Hoopern Fields, a large number of spectators were given a game well worth watching, although only a friendly. The forwards of both teams were verypowerful, splendid combined play being witnessed, First bood was drawn by St Sidwells per Eveleigh, who played a thoroughly vigerous game throughout Eveleigh soon scored again, then three other goals followed from Sellick, Thomas and Davies respectively. Heath scored for the Devon Regiment, When play was resumed in the 2nd half, the Regimental team made some severe attacks upon the United goal Johnson centreing again and again in fine style, but the forwards were very weak in shooting. Reath eventually scoring again, and this had the effect of putting the Sidwellians on their mettle, with the result that three further goals wereput on two by Eveleigh and one by Davies,

Scorer
Plympton:- Higman,

With the slope in their favour, the visitors pressed at the outset, but the defence of the United was sound, and Plympton were driven back. They soon returned howevern and from a rush Hignan put through their first goal. The Saints now had a turn at attacking and Coles looked like equalising, but his shot went wide, Each side pressed in turn, but neither could score. In the 2nd half play vas in favour of St Sidwells for a time, and the grand defence of Manning kept them out, for that player saved his side time after time, Plympton were well served by their Halfbacks, whoseplay was stronger and better together than Exeter's.

The visitors started with the wind and the slope in their favour, but despite being at a disadvantage the Saints maintained a stout defence, Eventually they forced play to their opponents quarters, and Thomas opened the scoring. Up to the interval the encounter was of an even nature, Aplin and Davies added two further goals, but Newton scored four times in the last 10 minutes of the half through Jack, Francis, Frost and Russell, The 2nd half was absolutely fatal to Newton and they crossed the half way line scarecely ever, The Saints showed some pretty combination and goaled per Thomas 2, Eveleigh and Sellick. The 2nd half was so one sided it was uninteresting from every point of view.

REST OF THE LEAGUE 2,

League Westaway 2.

This Association match was played at Mount Pleasant before a very good gate, The United played up the hill in the first half, and Sellick and Davies scoredin quick succession, The League then had a turn of attacking, and Westavay put them on equal terms with a couple of good shots, The Saints attacked on the left and Coles dribbled through to put the ball through the posts with a brilliant shot, thus restoring the lead to the home tean. With the slope in their favour in the 2nd half, it wasquickly apparent that St Sidwells would have matters much their own way. Their forwards combined finely and goals were scored by Davies, Thomas 2 Eveleigh 2, Sellick and Avery. The Rest of the League teas failed to respond and vere beaten easily.
