St Sidwell’s United

THE 1903-1904 SEASON

1st SEPTEMBER 1903

From the Western Times
“Recently it will be remembered that the East Devon Football Association was formed. Now there are for the Senior League seven teams consisting of Torquay United, Dawlish, St Sidwells, Exeter Training College, 110th, 111th and 112th Batterys Field Artillery. The latter have a very strong team being the holders of the Second Army Corps cup.

For the Junior League, fifteen teams have entered namely. Exeter Training College II, St Sidwells II, St Davids, St Matthews, Belmont, Friernhay, St Thomas, Emmanuel, Willey & Co, Culm Valley, Exmouth Albion, Exmouth Rovers, Dawlish Res, St Johns United and Heavitree to form teams at once.”

For the 1903/04 season St Sidwell’s United joined the newly formed East Devon Senior League. Their Reserves entered the Exeter and District Junior League. This was the first season that the Club played at St James Park.

Starting down the hill, St Sidwells nicely nursed the ball, and in the first minute Sellick centred and Eveleigh headed through, thus scoring a pretty goal. Play was close for a time, and ruled in favour of St Sidwells, but Newton broke away and got in a favourable position, the ball being shot over the net, The Saints replied to this with some good footwork, and Winter, who got the ball in the centre of the field, dribbled onwards, and sent in a sharp one, which beat the Newton goalkeeper. Winter then scored St Sidwell's 3rd goal, Luke having previously checked his shot close in, Almost immediately the visiting goalkeeper rather badly missed a kick by Eveleigh and the 4th goal was scored. Early in the 2nd half Knill for Newton neatly turned the ball in from a corner scoring the visitos first goal, On account of slack marking by St Sidwell's Halfbacks, Newton scored a 2nd goal through Jones, but Thomas replied in no time at all for the Saints, and then Thomas added a 6th, beating Campbell with a rousing shot.

The ground, St James's Field, was a perfect quagmire, it being practically impossible to kick the ball any length at all. The soldiers commenced operations and almost immediately pressed, Bailey eventually clearing his lines, End to end play next followed, Richardson putting through' for the Battery and Winter replying for St Sidwells. The soldiers who were far the heavier team, made ground fast with dangerous rushes, and a hot shot by Yates found the net. This was followed by an even more sensational goal by Richardson, Another goal by Yates in the 2nd half, was followed by one from Eveleigh for St Sidwells. The United were awarded a penalty for a foul, but Sellick failed to score with the kick, Robinson was fouled, and injured, and a short halt was made while he recovered, Free kicks to St Sidwells were numerous, but little advantage was taken of them, and Richardson scored again forthe Battery.

A high cross wind was blowing throught the game, to a certain extent spoiling the play, St Sidwells facing the slope, were on the defensive for most of the first half, one goal was scored by Dawlish before haf time, although it should never have been allowed, as Simmoonds was standing in an offside position when he kicked the ball through. The Referee however, allowed the goal, because in his opinion it had been touched by an Exonian before it had reached Simmonds, Winter should have scored for the United in this half, but allowed himself to be tobbed by O'Neill when he was clean through, At the commencement of the 2nd half, and for some 20 minutes thereafter, Dawlish attacked persistently and at length Simmonds beat Robinson for the 2nd time.

The St James's field was covered with a frost, Play at the start saw the visitors attacking, but Robinson was safe. The home team then surrounded their opponents Citadel, and Sellick opened the scoring with a low shot. The home team continued to press, and a penalty was awarded to them, but from the kick Gilbert shot over. The Exmouth team were then aggressive, and Winter (who had turned out for them, being a man short) shot a well earned goal, Fenwick and Eveleigh then scored for the Saints, Exmouth were the better team in the 2nd half, but their efforts at shooting were poor, and the only goal scored by St Sidwells came from a pass by Russell,

Neither team was at full strength, but Dawlish were the chief sufferers in this respect, as arriving three men short, and being able to get only two subs, they played throughout the game with four forwards. In the first half only one goal was scored, Thomas beating O'Neill with a low shot. The United pressed hotly from the restart, and a curious incident occured when the Referee gave them a penalty against O'Neill for taking too many steps while holding the ball, Mr Harvey forgot for a moment that a Referee may alter his decision and stuck to his verdict, and Morgan the St Sidwells Captain, intentionally kicked the ball wide of the goal, which was the correct action in these circumstances, In the 2nd half St Sidwells were all over their opponents, scoring 4 times, Robinson and Thomas obtaining two goals each.

The above League match was played at the Camp Field before a good number of spectators. The commencement of play saw the ball being sent up and down the field in a series of fast exchanges. Massey nearly scored for the Battery, but a free kick for a foul taken by Eveleigh resulted in agoal for the United. Bailey andAshford played splendidly at the back for the United, and their well judged kicks to the forwards gave the latter several good chances of increasing the score, but Thomas and Winter both failed from close in. Winter then made a capital run along the touchline, and from his centre Eveleigh scored a 2nd goal for the Saints. After Lemons the soldiers stormed the United Citadel and on one occasion were unlucky not to score, Massey shooting over the bar, The spectators were very excited over some strange decisions by the Referee, whose knowledge of the rules was only elementary. Walker eventually found the net for the Military after receiving a nice pass from Ebury.

Despite the inclement weather, there was a large number of people assembled at St James's Park to witness what was considered to be the "tit bit" of the season in local Association circles, On the College ground earlier this season, the Students had won by 6-1 and a splendid game was promised today. The kick off was performed by Mr Herbert of the Exeter Council, St Sidwells played up the hill in the first half, and with the Collegians attacking hard in the early stages, the United were put under severe pressure. A free kick taken by Gilpin looked dangerous, but Robinson fisted out, and Ashford cleared, The best players in this half were Ashford and Brooks, each kicking well. Shortly before the interval a fine centre from Winter was missed by Towers, and Sellick put the ball into the net. There was a sensation when play resumed in the 2nd half, Brooks being ordered off the field, According to the Referee for "gross impertinence", The Collegians although playing one back, had the better of the exchanges at the outset, and the United defence was put to a very severe test. A corner to the College was cleared, and a dribble by Morgan, half the length of the field brought welcome relief, The Saints then began to assert their superiority, and after some clever work by Keech and Eveleigh, the last named put through a 2nd goal, Continuing to have the better of the game the United scored again. Eveleigh being the last player to touch the ball, and with no hope of saving the game, the play of the Collegians fell away badly, Further goals were obtained by Keech and Sellick. United finished up easy winners,

The ground at the Camp Field was almost under water. The strong kicking of Ashford was the feature of the game in the first half, during which Level scored for the Battery and Russell for St Sidwells, After Lemons the game became very exciting, the soldiers getting to close quarters with Robinson, who saved many good shots. The Battery pinned the Saints in their preserves, but could not score. A penalty was awarded to the Saints but Morgan missed it.

The ground was terribly sticky and the going very heavy. Shortly before the close Ashford badly hurt his shoulder, but pluckily, though perhaps foolishly, continued to play, Robinson had to save a few ground shots but no real teasers" and he should learn to clear a little quicker. Neither of the backs were really in their best form, At times they got in some good tackles, but the kicking was feeble, even allowing for the heavy state of the ball and the ground. Ashford often got a good length but too often put the ball into touch. The halves all played a good hustling game, although Wallage was prone to leave his winger unmarked, Morgan, in attack, put in some very fine low passes, especially in the 2nd half, Davidson played a sterling game throughout, some of his play being very polished, The forwards gave a decent showing, and with a little more weight in the centre and the right wing would have probably notched at least two additional goals. Thomas was slow, but fed his wings and got into position to receive the return passes splendidly. For the Battery there is no doubt that the loss of Meecham, their outside right and Barron their Centre half, who were ordered abroad last year, has made a great difference to their team.

At the start the soldiers pressed for a short time, but Ashford and Bailey relieved, the home forwards then set to work and the Battery were severly tested, Keech making some brilliant attempts to score. Keech put one shot straight into the hands of the goalkeeper, but at length Morgan and Keech got going and from their foray to the goalline the ball was transferred to Thomas who notched the first goal. Davidson, Eveleigh and Thomas again took the play to the visitors half, but Axim kept them out. On the change of ends the 11th pressed, but their shooting apart from being wide of the mark was also weak, Davidson put in a shot which Axim saved, but he then slipped and Thomas nipped in to score United's 2nd goal.

A fair attendance saw St Sidwells kick off playing up the slope, but in the first minute agoal for the Battery was scored by Hill, Later play was in favour of the United, but Thomas struck the edge of the post, and a penalty was kicked wide, Eveleigh then scored for the Saints, and Smith for the Battery. Theensuing play was even, and it was after some hard work by the Grecians that Davidson scored, the goal being rather lucky.. Fenwick initiated a nice move in the 2nd half, which ended with Eveleigh shooting into the net, but the point was disallowed, Two further goals were obtained by Davidson, and in the scoring of the 2nd one, Steele was knocked out, but recovered.

Winter was conspicuous for some good touchline runs, but Stone was always on the spot when needed. Sellick was again on the warpath, and just before half time sent in a lovely goal, Kember in the 2nd half scored a fine goal for Torquay, with a shot that was too fast for Cann to stop. Bailey with along shot got the 3rd goal for St Sidwells, the goalkeeper making a very feeble attempt to save, Sellick and Eveleigh added further goals for St Sidwells.

Sellick scored for the Saints amid great enthusiasm, then Thomas and Sellick put shots over the bar. Plympton won the match, but a draw would have been à fairer result,

Davidson played a wonderful defensive game for the United, and also came close to scoring, O'Neill being fortunate to tip over the bar from one of his shots. Full time arrived with the scoreboard still showing a blank, and half an hours extra play was ordered, During the first portion of this extra time the Saints had by far the best of things, but still could not score. There was an excellent attendance for the East Devon Cup Final at the County Ground. The soldiers set the ball rolling but Eveleigh intercepted. The pass from Eveleigh was in turn intercepted by Gallagher, but the ball went into touch, The United forwards commenced to dribble up the field, and Winter ran fast along the touch line, Wells kicking over from his pass, Wallage was seen to advantage, but when the ball was transferred to Eveleigh, that player was checked by Clarke, Salt sent in a shot for the Artillery which was saved by Robinson, and when the Saints got through again, Davidson put in a shot which travelled over the bar, Midway through the first half, Ebery made a fast dash through and passed to Charleton who opened the scoring. 10 minutes before the interval, Wells equalised with a brilliant shot amid great enthusiasm, Robinson cleared from Massey and half time came with the score in equality at one all. The 2nd half started with St Sidwells kicking off and pressing at once, Johnson eventually kicking out of danger. After Massey and Ebery had been checked by Bailey, the ball was sent out to Winter, who dribbled finely up to the touchlin e but was crowded out, St Sidwells forced a corner, but they lost the chance of a goal throgh weak shooting. The soldiers went up the field with a combined rush, and Lieut Sanders receiving from Charleton, netted the ball with a fine shot and put his side ahead, This success was obtained just four minutes from the finish. Up and down play followed, St Sidwells making strenuous efforts to equalise, but Irons and Gallagher defended strongly, all attempts being repelled.

REVIEW OF 1903-1904.

by Rover Football Express

Concerning the players of St Sidwell United this season, it has been more so than in the past, possible to keep a settled team together in most matches, and this has largely been the reason of the club having such a succesful season, Rbinson, the goalkeeper has been in fine fettle, and shaped well in particularly all the games. The Reserves goalkeeper, Cann, shows promise of becoming a good custodian in time, The backs have defended very stoutly, and the strong and useful kicking of Ashford has been a feature, Davidson is a star Halfback. The way he breaks up the combined moves of opposing forwards is splendid to behold, Wallage except on occasions when he has been brilliant is not consistent, while Morgan, the Captain, is better at attacking than at defending.

ST SIDWELLS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING REPORT

Western Times 1 June 1904
The Annual General meeting of the St Sidwells Football club was held at the Red Lion in Sidwell Street. Mr C Fay took the chair and the Hon Secretary Mr W. H. Thomas reported that the club had a balance in hand of £5.5s
Last season the first eleven played 29 matches, winning 20, losing 5 and drawing 4 scoring 108 goals against 43.
The position of the team was third which was a very creditable performance. In the East Devon cup the club reached the final when they were defeated by the 110th Battery 2-1.
This in no way disgraced the club considering the Battery were in the final for the Second Army Corps cup. The Reserves played 27 matches winning 20, losing 3 and drawing 4. They occupied third place in the Exeter & District Junior League. The Chairman voted the adoption of the report, seconded by Mr Morgan and carried.

“Name Change”

Mr H. Willey was elected President for the coming year. Other officers were elected and the decision was taken to change the name of the St Sidwell’s club to the Exeter City Association Football Club.
