Joe White signed on loan from Newcastle United in January 2023 until the end of the 2022/23 season. The grandson of Peter Hampton (Leeds, Stoke, Burnley, Rochdale and Carlisle), he had played for England under-18s alongside Jay Stansfield.

Joe, from Carlisle, joined Newcastle's as a 14-year-old progressing through the ranks to appear for the first-team in a pre-season friendly at Rotherham United in July 2021. As a youth player at Newcastle Joe played for England under-18s. Then, as Joe progressed on Tyneside, he sat on the bench for an FA Cup match and several Premier League games in 2021/22 before playing fifteen games on loan at Hartlepool United. He had recently played for Newcastle in a friendly in Saudi Arabia before joining Exeter.

Joe made his debut for Exeter as a second-half substitute against Forest Green Rovers on 14 January 2023. Appearing sixteen times, without scoring, Joe's final game for the Grecians was at Sheffield Wednesday on 22 April.

Returning to Tyneside afterwards, he was subsequently loaned to Crewe Alexandra between August 2023 and January 2024 ahead of making his Premier League debut for Newcastle as a substitute against AFC Bournemouth in February 2024. Appearing three more times from the bench during the remainder of the season, Joe was later loaned to Milton Keynes Dons in August 2024.
