Exeter City Ladies 0 Newquay 2

City Ladies went into this game as clear underdogs and knew it would be a tough match, after previous encounters. The team started well and matched Newquay for much of the first half. Newquay had the edge as, although City were battling hard they struggled to create chances for their attackers. Much of the play took place in midfield, as both teams cancelled each other out with equal possession. But after 35 minutes, Newquay broke the deadlock with a well worked goal and City went in at half time 1-nil down.

The second half was much the same as the first, with the majority of the play in the centre of the pitch. Each side had chances, but couldn't produce the killer touch. Both teams had periods of good passing football, and the work rate and commitment was very high. Newquay scored their second in the late stages of the game, after a misunderstanding between the City defence and goalkeeper allowed the Newquay striker to nip in and score. City had a few late chances, with Jo Goldsworthy hitting inches wide with a 30 yard shot, and Stacey Pearson going close following good work in the midfield. Manager Steve Mclear said: "We knew this was going to be hard, but I was very proud of the team today - they gave 110%. Even with key players out through injury, and players out of position, they battled hard. 'They matched Newquay for the majority of the game, but were felled by short lapses of concentration which allowed Newquay to gain control.

'Rachel Edwards had a fine display playing out of position in the centre of defence, adding strength to the defence and putting in some superb challenges. We showed great team spirit and put in a very encouraging display."
