MATCH REPORT

Sunday 14 November - SWWFL- Premier Division

Newquay 2 Exeter City Ladies 1

City went into this game knowing it was going to be a real challenge following Newquay's very good start to the season. However City's confidence was high after some recent good results.

From the kick off City worked hard, battling for every ball, and playing some neat passing football. Newquay tried to press several times but were kept out by a strong City defence. But after 25 minutes the pressure finally paid off with the home side scoring after City failed to clear the ball.

The goal didn't seem to knock City and they continued to press, with good work from wingers Natz and Stef Matthews on the flanks. Shortly afterwards City were rewarded with a free kick about 25 yards out, after an infringement from the Newquay defence. Rachel Edwards stepped up and placed the ball into the top corner with ease, to level the game.

In the second half City again came out focused from the start, with players working hard all over the pitch. Much of the game was in the middle of the park, and both Newquay and City failed to create any real chances.

City then suffered the blow of left back Danielle Pearson, who had been having a great game, having to be replaced due to a knee injury. Newquay used this to their advantage, and after a quick break and fine through ball, they were left one on one with the keeper, and the chance was taken to give them a 2-1 lead.

The home side kept pressing and another similar attack again left City 'keeper Sarah Bell facing a one on one, but this time she made a fine save. City continued to battle looking for the equaliser that they deserved, but they were unable to create any real chances due to a strong Newquay midfield.

Manager Steve McLear said: "I was very proud of my team today, to be honest they really deserved a draw. Every player gave 100%, whilst playing some fine football.

'I was concerned before todays game as we had several key players missing, and know how in-form Newquay are but this didn't pose a problem. Again it was encouraging to see fringe players come on and have such great games. was especially pleased with Danielle Pearson and Stef Matthews.

This was a very encouraging result and performance for us. I've never doubted my players' abilities, and they proved out there today just what they're capable of."
