South West Women's Football League
Premier Division
Exeter City Ladies 0
Newquay Ladies 3
This was always going to be a hard game, but it ended up being a disappointing performance and result for City. Unlike City's previous performance against Newquay, where they narrowly lost out in the last minutes after a great team display, Exeter were under pressure from the beginning of this game. After just 18 minutes a defensive error saw Newquay take the lead and just 5 minutes later a similar problem allowed the visitors to score their second. A good City build up saw winger Gina Clark making a great run, passing to Jo Goldsworthy who set up Danielle Pearson with a one on one, but the Newquay 'keeper pulled off a fine save.
Shortly afterwards a similar build up saw Goldsworthy set up Court for another one on one, but the Newquay keeper did well again to put Court straight under pressure and deny City. Newquay then continued to press, but were kept out by the City defence. City went in at half time 0-2 down, after a disappointing first half. In the second half City started to play some neat passing football, but failed to create many goal scoring opportunities. However, the second half was a much better performance with firm challenges being made, some good build up play and solid defensive work.
Newquay did score their third after a quick break, but the City defence stood firm to stop Newquay from increasing their lead.
Manager Steve McLear said: "This was a disappointing performance and really could have been a great game for us, but some players didn't seem to want it enough today.
'Within the first 25 minutes we had lost the game, through poor focus and communication. Unfortunately with a great team like Newquay you can't afford to do this, otherwise it's at your cost, as was proved today.
'Up until this game we have been making fine progress, with great team performances. We will bounce back from this result and work on the problems to get back on form again".
