Match 17
12/12/2004
League
Frome Town (Home)
Sunday 12 December
South West Women's Football League Premier Division
Exeter City Ladies 5 Frome Town 1
City went into this game needing a win, and produced one in convincing style. From the whistle Exeter dominated in all areas, and scored their first goal after ten minutes. Natalie Matthews set up her sister Stef,(photo) who placed a low drive into the bottom corner to put City ahead.
Exeter Ladies continued to press with a few near misses, before Natalie Matthews scored to increase City's lead, following a great 25 yard run and a well struck drive to finish. City went on to further their lead with a second for Stef Matthews, lobbing the keeper with ease after a one on one to put City 3 ahead at half time. In the second half City sat back for the first ten minutes, which resulted in a Frome goal. This sparked Exeter back into life, and again they began to dominate with some good passing football. After a couple of opportunities, City increased their lead when Stacey Pearson played a great through ball to jo Goldsworthy, who span the defender while the ball was in the air and struck a perfect volley into the top corner.
Shortly after, Exeter scored their fifth, when Goldsworthy converted a firm cross with another volley. The last ten minutes was all one way traffic in City's favour, but they couldn't add to their tally. Manager Steve McLear said: "We knew going into this game it was essential to get three points, as the two teams above us had easy fixtures.
"Over the last couple of weeks we've been working on creative play, and today it worked a treat with the midfield feeding early balls to the forwards. All of the goals were well worked goals, with some great build up play.
"Every player today gave 110% and we thoroughly deserved the win. To beat the team third in the league in such a convincing manner, proves that on our day we can match the top teams."
