Penzance (Away)

SUNDAY 6th FEBRUARY 2005

SOUTH WEST WOMEN'S FOOTBALL LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

PENZANCE 1 EXETER CITY LADIES 1

With both teams on equal points in the league, with identical wins, losses and draws, this game was always going to be close and it proved to be just that.

City travelled down to Penzance with some key players missing, resulting in the squad being down to the bare minimum of 11. Defender Danielle Pearson, who is in fine form this season, is sidelined due to a knee injury, whilst strikers Emma Redwood and Tracey Cross and midfielder Mandy Earle were all unavailable. Newcomer Naomi Wilkins was also carrying an injury. However, City began the game well playing some neat passsing football, but lacking the crucial final pass to create many chances. Much of the play took place in midfield for a long period, but City did come close on a few occasions. A volley from Rachel Edwards nearly saw the keeper help the ball into the back of her own net, but she recovered just in time to keep it out. Jo Goldsworthy shot just wide after a fine run, and Stef Matthews was close to capitalising on a fine through ball with the keeper pulling off a great save.

The second half started much the same with City again dominating posession. Defender Kellie Hall was then fouled and had to leave the field of play for treatment to her face, which left City with just ten players. But City adjusted well and just after the hour took the lead. Penzance were struggling to clear their lines and Stacey Pearson scored with a fine header to put City ahead. City continued to play with 10 players for a large part of the second half. Although this prevented them from taking risks, they continued to dominate play. However, Penzance managed a late equaliser minutes before the end, leaving City with no time to try to regain their lead.

Manager Steve Mclear said: "I was proud of the team's performance today. It was always going to be a hard game for us, we had many crucial players missing but we battled hard.

*To be honest if you told me before the game we would have a draw, would have settled for that because of the circumstances. However, as we went ahead even with only ten players, it's disappointing to finish the game without a win.

*A lack of concentration for seconds in the last minute of the game cost us points, however it was a spirited performance from the team. I was particularly pleased with Sally Ames' (photo) performance on the wing, she worked extremely hard as did defender Christina Matthews.

*I look forward to our next game, Newquay in the cup. Being the underdogs we have nothing to lose, Newquay are an accomplished squad and it should prove to be a good game."
