Match 08
24/11/2013
DC Cup
Torquay Ladies (Away)
Torquay United Ladies 0
Exeter City Ladies 1
Devon FA County Cup, quarter-final Sunday 24th November 2013
Defending Devon FA County Cup champions Exeter City Ladies took one step closer to the final with a single-goal victory over neighbours Torquay United Ladies in Ipplepen.
It needed an industrious performance from the Exeter Ladies, as Torquay were well- organised and frustrated the Grecians, who were trying to get the ball down and play with tempo. The Gulls, meanwhile, were also struggling to create openings as centre-half partnership Catherine Wright and Kate Hine stood firm. The visitors suffered a blow when Kirsty Caunter committed and won a 50-50 challenge, but sustained a cruciate injury in the process and had to be replaced.
Torquay were the most satisfied at going goalless into the break, but the Grecians continued to play at a frantic pace against tiring legs. Lola Garcia Sanchez, Tash Knapman and sub Sophie-Lou Simpson all drew saves from the Gulls' stopper.
But the deadlock was broken by the game's only goal on the hour-mark, as Simpson and Garcia Sanchez combined well for the latter to square for Knapman, who finished with typical decisiveness.
They join AFC Plympton, Marine Academy and Plymouth Argyle in the final four of the competition.
