League
Forest Green Rovers (Home)
Exeter City Ladies 2
Forest Green Rovers Ladies 1
South West Women's Combination
Sunday 9th March 2014
Exeter City Ladies continued their fine post-Christmas form with a fourth straight victory by beating Forest Green Rovers 2-1 at Topsham Town FC.
The victory, on the Grecians' first home game for over a month, took them level on points with the third-placed visitors with three games in hand.
Forest Green had a majority of the possession but struggled to break down a well- organised Exeter side which was marshalled by the combination of Kate Hine, Catherine Wright and Leah Brooks. Indeed it was Exeter that had the first chance of the game as Tash Knapman, who returned in place of the absent Helen Kukor, slipped in Sophie Lou Simpson but the shot was cleared by the recovering defender.
However the same combination combined well ahead of the first goal - Knapman won a free-kick which was whipped in by Catherine Wright, and a defensive mix-up allowed Lola Garcia Sanchez to poke into the empty net.
At the other end, Maxine Coupe had to be alert to keep out the Forest Green attack and twice made good saves. The second half saw Exeter continue to frustrate their guests and look sharp on the counter - and when Vicky Barter won a free-kick just over halfway, some quick thinking by Catherine Wright saw the City captain pick out Knapman on the move from the dead ball and the striker rolled in City's second. Exeter had to endure a tense end to the game as Hine conceded a penalty, which was converted, with 15 minutes to play, but the Exeter Ladies stayed strong and held onto the three points.
Exeter City Ladies:
Coupe, Potts, Wright, Hine, Ghiglia, Brooks, Barter, Sanchez, Simpson, Knapman, Staddon.
