Exeter City Ladies 15

South West Women's Combination Sunday 16th March 2014

Exeter City Ladies continued their climb up the South West Combination Premier table in some style with a 15-1 demolition of the University of Portsmouth Ladies in Hampshire.

Portsmouth Uni, who had failed to raise a team the previous weekend for the trip to Keynsham Development, were comprehensively picked apart by Exeter and the Grecians moved up to third in the table, with plenty of games in hand on league leaders Swindon and within a point of rivals Plymouth. The victory for Exeter was their fifth on the hop, and the 14-goal swing could potentially prove all-important at the season's end. Any of the top four clubs - including Chichester, who remain unbeaten in their 12 games this year - would fancy their chances of taking the league title.

Exeter got the ball down and played fantastic passing football and produced moments of quality in their end-product on a superb surface in Portsmouth. Susan Badger, signed ahead of the registration deadline and formerly of Middlesbrough and Portsmouth, impressed on the wing in her debut. Marika Ghiglia and Sophie Lou Simpson also both put in eye-catching performances.

The goal that City conceded came when an unfortunate clearance by Corine Potts landed at the feet of the opposition forward and allowed for a good one-on-one finish. But aside from that blip, the Grecians controlled the game throughout and kept a high tempo.

Tash Knapman netted six, Helen Kukor scored five, Carla Staddon netted twice and Lola Garcia Sanchez grabbed one - all after the scoring had been opened courtesy of an unfortunate own-goal.

Exeter are going for a sixth straight win as they face Shanklin tomorrow at Topsham Town, kicking off at 2pm.

Exeter City Ladies: V.Wright, Potts, C.Wright, Ghiglia, Brooks, Barter, Sanchez, Badger, Knapman, Kukor, Simpson (Staddon).
