SWH Ltd Devon Women's
Senior Cup Final

Despite turning in a battling and committed performance, Exeter City Ladies were ultimately defeated 5-1 in the final of the SWH Ltd Devon Women's Senior Cup final at the hands of neighbours Plymouth Argyle. In a rematch of the previous year's final, the Pilgrims managed to avenge the defeat in 2013 to lift the trophy this time around to take the title from the holders at the Coach Road ground, headquarters of Devon County FA.

Indeed Exeter were trailing from as early as the second minute, when Emily Mousley found a bit of space to run into on the right flank - despite having Marika Ghiglia in close attention, the forward still managed to work space to dispatch a clean, looping strike into the top corner from distance. Exeter had a chance to pull level almost immediately as Kirsty Caunter's corner found the head of Josie Copp, but the centre-half's header crashed against the crossbar.

Instead, it was the Grecians that were picking the ball out of the net on two occasions in quick succession. Firstly Ellie Dorey found an opening on the left and popped a shot inside the near post, and soon after Mousley picked up a loose ball in a similar position and fired a low shot across goalkeeper Dani Bradford for Argyle's third.

Argyle were quickest to the second ball and quick to pounce on anything loose, meaning that City's attacking trio of Helen Kukor, Lola Garcia Sanchez and Tash Knapman were isolated upfield and unable to build. However Exeter did get the next goal just before the half-hour mark, courtesy of captain Catherine Wright. In a fashion very reminiscent of the goal she scored to win the cup a year ago, Wright's free-kick from deep caught out goalkeeper Michaela Phillips, who could only spill into the net whilst backpedalling as the ball cleared all the bodies in the box. But the three-goal cushion was soon re-established from an Argyle corner. A well-rehearsed set piece allowed Mousley to arrive unmarked to head in her hat-trick goal. Kukor was twice almost released early after the interval, but only stubborn defensive play from the Pilgrims' defence denied the City striker from pulling the trigger.

Mousley twice came close to scoring her fourth - firstly glancing a header from skipper Katie Middleton's free-kick just wide, and secondly with a right-footed drive which whisked past the base of the post. Knapman's free-kick from just outside the area skimmed the top of the bar on the way over for Exeter, after sub Vicky Barter had been fouled after she got a shot away.

There was no lack of determination from Exeter, and Kukor in particular was leading the line by chasing down all the lost causes - though a late and overzealous challenge on Argyle goalkeeper Phillips earned a booking for the striker.

Cutting inside off the left flank, a powerful, swirling effort by Dorey cannon off the underside of the crossbar and back into play to deny the forward her second - but midfielder Mollie Taylor stole the show with a corking effort from the best part of 35 yards and into the top corner for a late fifth for Argyle, who were crowned champions.
