MATCH REPORT
Sunday 15 January 2006
Devon County FA Women's Cup Quarter-Final
Exeter City Ladies 2 Alphington 0
Exeter City eased into the semi-finals of the Devon Women's FA Cup thanks to a comfortable 2-0 home victory over Alphington on Sunday. Striker Emma Redwood scored in each half to seal what
Grecians' boss Steve McLear described as 'a one-sided contest'. Exeter are mid-table in the South West Women's League Premier Division, while the Alphas are struggling in Division One (South), so the home side were expected to emerge victorious.
But McLear's side did make hard work of it by missing a string of good chances, particularly in the first half. City, who lost skipper Jo Goldsworthy to injury early on, did eventually break the deadlock after 38 minutes, when Redwood rounded off a flowing move with a calm finish.
And she wrapped up victory on 65 minutes, when she slotted home a penalty after 15-year-old debutant Jess Hooper had been hacked down. "It was probably the most one-sided game you will see in a very long time," McLear said.
"We should have had the game killed off by half-time, but we just couldn't score. But overall I'm well pleased with the players' performances in very difficult conditions." Exeter will face either Newton Abbot or Feniton in the last four after their scheduled match at Coach Road was postponed on Sunday.
