Goodchild played for Exeter City in the Plymouth and District League before the club turned professional in 1908.

In a season in which thirty-two players appeared for the first-team, he made his solitary first-team appearance against St Michael’s (Plymouth) on 23 November 1907. 

Joining at the start of the 1907/08 season from Bedford Association (forerunners of Bedford Town) he also played in the practice match on 30 August 1907 and in a number of reserve games that season.
