ROVING WITH THE RESERVES'
The start of a new season in the Rothmans Western League for our Reserve Team brings an even greater challenge now that the 1st team are competing in the third division again. It is imperative that the gap between the two teams is kept as small as possible and that both teams are similarly organised, but that is not an easy thing to achieve for many reasons. A small professional staff, part-time coaches, some amateur players, make the job difficult but not impossible!
The clubs new training and coaching programme has been carefully devised to try and overcome these disadvantages. Many of the 1st team patterns and set pieces have been rehearsed by the Reserve and Youth team squad during an intensive pre-season build up. Special all day coaching sessions have taken place which hopefully will make the clubs other teams as well organised and attractive to watch as our first XI. Under Trainer/Coach KEN RAMSDEN, the lads have achieved a high level of fitness and certainly no player should be lacking in that respect!
The Reserve Team, I am sure, will be unrecognisable to supporters from last years side and two of the new signings include 21 year old midfield man DICK FORBES. Dick has played for Brighton F.C, the England Schools Under 18 team and has also represented the Western League XI. Fullback TONY MITCHELL was formerly with Leatherhead in the Isthmian League and has represented the Western League and Surrey County. Both players are currently studying at St Lukes College and I am hopeful that they will follow in the footsteps of other St Lukes lads, Alan Pinkney and John Baugh, straight into the first team.
Other young players to watch should be last years Youth Team Skipper JEFF WEEKS (Graham's brother), striker ANDY WHITE and hard tackling ANDY ROWDEN. They all played for last seasons Youth Team and will be fighting hard to establish themselves in the coming season.
The purpose of a Reserve Team is not just to win matches but to facilitate the technical and tactical development of individual players. But if that can be achieved in a winning team then everyone is happy. I hope it can, please support the lads and see!
