Match 07

Dayhead Cup
Dorchester Town (away)
Dayhead Cup
Dorchester Town 1
Exeter Rangers 0
EXETER RANGERS LADIES F.C.
REPORT by WENDY RICHARDS.
Since the last Exeter City programme, not too much has happened in the Exeter Rangers camp! But since the departure of our Manager Adrian Bartlett, the committee decided that before we advertise for someone else, we would try and carry on with our trainer Dave Layfield and myself, Wendy Richards as a joint management team to see how this would work.
The first test came in midweek when the Exeter Rangers were invited to take part in the Davhead Cup against Dorchester Ladies at their Avenue Stadium ground. The Davhead Cup commenced in 1990 with Dorchester Ladies playing against invited teams, and they have won it every year since.
Dorchester's own sponsor, Nick Gyer of Davhead D.I.Y. gave Dorchester the cup, the first match taking place at the old ground in Weymouth Avenue.,. Dorchester Town have since moved, as many of you will be aware, to a brand new ground close by. Dorchester Town Ladies were actually the first and last Womens team ever to play on the old pitch!
Dorchester's first opponents were local rivals Weymouth ladies who they beat
4-1. In 1991 Dorchester hosted the second Davhead Cup at the new Avenue Stadium against Yetminster Ladies and won 3-1. In 1992 the visitors were Bristol Rovers Ladies, but they were beaten 9-2 as Dorchester retained the cup.
This year Dorchester invited Exeter Rangers, and we were all looking forward to playing this great new stadium, and the game was covered live on Radio Devon and being filmed by the BBC, so it was quite an occasion for all of us. We ran out under the floodlights onto the pitch which was like a green carpet, and to our surprise, in the grandstand, there were spectators!!
I must admit, because we had already beaten Dorchester Ladies 5- 0 in a pre-season friendly, this cup match was thought as a mere formality with victory coming our way. This was soon to be proved wrong. Because there had been some rain, the pitch was greasy on top and we found that although we had quite a bit of the play, the ball was skimming away from us, and it was proving hard to control. But all credit to Dorchester, who seemed to get hold of the ball and were getting in quite a few shots on goal.
The first half ended goalless when we had really expected to be a couple in front! Still it goes to prove that 'football is a funny old game'. The second half saw us trying to get a grip on the match, but it was not to be and 15 minutes after the break Dorchester striker Sarah Eveleigh, (who had been hard to keep quiet all game), broke through our defence, and even though I ran out of goal to close her shooting angle, she sidefooted the ball to my left and beyond my reach, and into the back of the net.
We were devastated! We made a substitution and tried to step up our game, but Dorchester kept up the pace and tried even harder for a second goal. About ten minutes from the end we brought on our only hope our second substitute
Sam Cox, who I am sure won't mind me saying was not at all prepared for this appearance as she had only come to watch and had no boots, shin pads etc! Still, she managed to squeeze her size six feet into a pair of boots much too small for her and raced onto the pitch. The instructions were to hit long balls over the Dorchester defence for Sam to finish it off by scoring.
Sam did just that only to be told she was offside, and it would not count. The final whistle went and we had lost 1-0! It had though, been a great experience and we would like to say thank you to Dorchester for inviting us to play in the cup and at such a great venue. It will be some time before we can play on such a good pitch as that!
Although we lost, Dave and myself learnt a lot from that game and we had changed a few players into different positions and will be doing some rethinking before our away match at Tongwynlias in the League.
That game will hopefully be the turning point for all the team where we hope to get some well deserved points which are desparately needed to keep us away from the bottom of the table where we seem to be lurking at the moment.
We are however looking for anybody to come and help Dave in training, not on regular basis, but maybe as a one off for a number of different people.
