Exeter City Reserves hosted their final game of the season on Sunday as Swindon Town Development were the visitors to Bradninch. City welcomed back captain Yvie Miler after a recent operation, with Poppy Cloke and Jemima Lister both making starts.
Exeter created several chances early on, with Lexi Watts hitting the post after five minutes and Danni Skinner and Lister having shots saved by the Town Goalkeeper. It was on 16 minutes that Exeter took a deserved lead, a corner by Watts wasn’t cleared and the ball fell nicely for Chloe Harris to fire home, her third goal in the last three games.
Swindon came close to equalising when a free kick was headed onto the post by Exeter defender Lucy Palmer, but the Grecians went into half time a goal ahead.
City were quick to strike after the break, Palmer playing a delightful ball into the path of Harris, whose cross was met by Lister, she found Watts to score on her second attempt, the initial shot saved by the Swindon Goalkeeper.
Lucy Spiller had to be quick off her line to prevent a Swindon chance shortly after, however Town fought back with two quick goals. The first goal was scored direct from a corner and then on 63 minutes, when Exeter couldn’t clear their lines, a shot from the edge of box took a wicked deflection to level the scores.
Exeter had to regroup and made two quick substitutions, Kitty Rumens and Livia Pinker replacing Skinner and Palmer.
Swindon, having had no substitutes, were down to ten players on 70 minutes after an injury forced one of their players off the pitch. Robyn Wickens replaced Lauren Bullock at right back on 81 minutes to give fresh legs down the Grecians right.
With Exeter pressing the Swindon goal and looking to win the game, they would have to wait until the 85th minute to go ahead. Cloke made a direct run into the penalty area and was felled for a penalty kick. Cloke took on the responsibility, but her shot was saved by the keeper, the rebound falling kindly to Ella-Mae Miller to fire home.
A minute later and Exeter finished off the game, Watts found Lister on the left and, with time and space, she fired a shot past the keeper.
A deserved win in the end and with the season complete the team can feel pleased with their individual and collective performances this campaign.
