THE Cobblers served up sunshine finish to the sea- son as crisis-hit Exeter were condemned to the Division Three wooden spoon.
Exeter, who need to raise £350,000 by May 18 to ensure they kick-off next sea- son, were always second best, and only the heroics of goalkeeper Peter Fox prevented a landslide.
Player-coach Danny O'Shea put Northampton ahead on 36 minutes, and ever-present defender lan Sampson flicked home a 67th minute header for a second.
Ian Brown and Player-of- the-Year Neil Grayson could have both doubled the score as the Cobblers laid siege to the Exeter goal, but the Devon side pulled themselves back into it with an 83rd minute penalty from Jason Minett.
Match Report 2
CRISIS club Exeter were green with envy as Northampton showed that life after financial administration need not be all doom and gloom.
Three years ago Northampton were plunged towards possible oblivion when they announced debts of ground £lm. A two-year period in administration followed and then came this season's salvation.
Crowds have rocketed and nearly 7,000 saw the Cobblers collect their sixth win in 10 home matches since Ian Atkins took over as manager in January.
Player-coach Danny O'Shea and ever- present defender Ian Sampson scored the goals, with Exeter goalkeeper Peter Fox keeping the floodgates closed before the Devon side replied with a Jason Minett penalty. The defeat meant Exeter, like Northampton in the hands of administrators, finished bottom of Division Three. But their real battle for survival now hinges on raising £350,000 by the League's May 18th deadline
Chairman Ivor Doble said: "There is a lot of work to do. Our creditors are very good and support the club. The biggest problem remains the tax man and the VAT man. But fingers crossed we can survive."
Just in case they don't, around 1,000 Exeter fans made the pilgrimage to Northampton for an emotional afternoon- no matter what happens later.
