Match 12
2nd October 1957
Gillingham (h)
WEDNESDAY 2nd OCTOBER 1957.
A POINT FOR CITY BUT FEW THRILLS.
GILLINGHAM 1
Brodie; Parry, Hannaway; Evans, Boswell, Laing; Payne, Morgan, SaundersHutton, Clark,
EXETER CITY 1
Bell; Foley, Mitchell, Harvey, Simpson; Robinson, Currie, Hill, Churms, Rees, Scorers Gillingham Hutton, Exeter City RobinsonAttendance 5,297. The gaining of a hard won point at Gillingham was cold comfort for Exeter CityThere was little to commend either side in a game that produced few thrills for the spectators and a pathetic lack of football skill. It was only after Robinson had given City a 55th minute lead when he cut in to meet a cross from Rees and netted with a shot off the post, that the players showed any real endeavour. All too often their energies were employed in robust tackling rather than in skillful football. Chief credit for Exeter's point goes to their defence, which although unable to prevent Gillingham having half a dozen of their choicest chances all of which were squandered, never allowed themselves to become flustered in the face of prolonged periods of attack, Exeter's forwards were seldom in the game but at least they did take one of the two chances that came their way whereas Gillingham could only manage to convert one out of seven chances, Gillingham's goal came three minutes after Robinsons. A header from Hutton following a cross from Laing from a few yards range gave Bell no chance, After that Gillingham had more of the play but their attack broke down against a defence that was playing with far more confidence and with the obvious intention of saving a point,
