Many people had come to St James's Park to see new signing Gordon Dale, but he didn't get enough of the ball because so many of City's players looked incapable of giving an accurate pass, or in fact of doing anything but turn in the shambling, shocking performance without plan or purpose except in too slavishly sticking to offside tactics which beat Walsall but only just, With Simpson and Butterworth the wing halves doing little right, Foley had his worst game, Rees expanded a lot of wasted energy and Calland did hardly anythimng, That list of failures cuts City's possibilities down right away and explains why Walsall were on top from start to finish, That they only scored once, Richard's goal in the 73rd minute was due to Harvey, Hunter and to a lesser extent Mitchell and to the fumbling inept soft shoe shooting. City scored their two goals through the man of the match, Churms, who had his best game since joining Exeter from Coventry, Whenever there was a half chance of a goal there was Churms chasing hard for the ball, His goals in the first and 24th minutes were the result of anticipation and hard going for two fine passes from Rees and Wilson who altogether had his best first team game."
