Match 01
September 2008
Fenton Ladies FC (a)
Exeter City Ladies F.C. report with Tamsin Braund
Feniton Ladies FC v Exeter City Ladies F.C.
This was ECFC's first league game of the season and they started well. Within the first fifteen minutes a ball over the top from Gabby Stoneman found Hannah Cox who scored City's first. Five minutes later and a good one two with Naomi Wilkins put Cox through again to score her second. The third goal of the game came from Gemma Ralph (who was a new signing for City this season) After a great run down the right wing, she cut inside to strike the ball cleanly into the top of the net, giving the keeper no chanceThe final goal of the first hall came from a Tamsin Braund free kick just inside City's half which was put into the back of the net by Cox after a goal mouth scramble 4-0 to ECFC at half time!
The girls started slowly in the second half which saw Feniton sneak their only goal of the gamewhen a corner was converted from a frenzied scramble in City's goal mouth. This seemed to motivate the girls and this was answered immediately by a fantastic 25 yard strike from Kerry Hurley to make the score 5-1. City turned up the pressure and a further two goals followed in the space of minutes from Hannah Cox with the assistance of Naomi Wilkins and Gabby Stoneman. A Kerry Hurley cross from the left with twenty minutes remaining, was converted by Zoe Kingdom to make it 8-1.
However Feniton were not going down without a fight causing Rosie McGuire City's keeper who is a loan signing (from Plymouth Argyle) to pull off a fantastic save as they tried to drill the ball into the bottom left comer. Feniton continued to apply the pressure but with some great defending from full backs Sam Charles and Leanne Stonelake no further goals were conceded. As the team grew with confidence the centre halfs applied more pressure and were told to push on by manager Steve Tully, Jade Maryan picked up the ball deep within City's half and took it past four of Feniton's players before netting her first of the season.
The final goal came with five minutes to go when Tamsin Braund drove forward down the centre of the pitch playing the ball through to Hannah Cox to net her sixth goal of the game. On the full time whistle the score ended 10-1 to City a fantastic start to the season for the girls!
This match was the first played by the girls in their new white kit kindly provided and sponsored by the Supporters Trust.
