Biographical Text

Dion Rankine, from Chelsea, joined Exeter City on a season-long loan in July 2023. Aged twenty, and having played for the Stamford Bridge’s club youth and development sides, his switch to Exeter was the first loan move of his career. Returning afterwards to Stamford Bridge, he soon signed for Wigan Athletic.

Born in Barnet, he had been on Cambridge United’s books up to the under-14 age group before becoming a Chelsea scholar/trainee in 2019. Soon signing a professional deal he moved through the age-group teams ahead of appearing in Chelsea’s Premier League 2 team in 2022/23. He had also featured in Chelsea's EFL Trophy team including playing against Exeter City on 24 August 2021.

He was one of eight players to make his Grecians’ debut in the win at Wycombe Wanderers on the opening day of the 2023/24 season. Suffering a serious injury against Burton Albion at the start of September, Dion did not return to first-team action until late November and subsequently scored his first goal for City in the 3-2 defeat at Reading on 1 January 2024. Appearing through to the end of the campaign, he eventually started 21 league games and came on as a substitute in another dozen

Returning to Chelsea, and after five years as both a scholar/trainee and professional, Dion signed a permanent contract with Wigan Athletic in June 2024.
