Johnson played for Exeter City in the Plymouth and District League before the club turned professional in 1908.

A student at St Luke’s College, he made one first-team appearance for Exeter City against Plymouth Argyle reserves on 29 February 1908. In a season when thirty-two players appeared for the team, he was one of three players who made their only-ever appearances in this game.
