Season Summary

The following was a report in the Express and Echo, after the 44th game of the season against Rochdale

EXETER CITY'S average gates have gone up by  almost 100 this season. More than 100,000 people—102,228—watched the 23 League games at St. James's Park, to give an average of 4,444 per match, as against 4,347 last year.

The highest attendance was in the opening game, against Torquay United, when there were 9,676 people through the turnstiles.

And with a couple more results to come in, it looks as if the City will finish in almost exactly the same spot as they did last season. Then they were 18th out of 23 clubs. This season they will be 17th or 18th.

Last season they collected 37 points from their 44 games, this season they have 42 points from 46 games.

At home, they won 9, drew 6, and lost 8, scoring 27 goals and conceding 32. Away they won 7, drew 4, and lost 12, scoring 30 goals and conceding 45.

Carter top scorer

Top scorer was Ray Carter with 19 goals from his 40 league appearances. Next in line was John Henderson, who arrived from Charlton just before Christmas to get 8 goals in 24 games.

The men who made most league appearances were goalkeeper Colin Tinsley and wing-half Des Anderson (44 each), but no-one played in every game.

Appearances: League-Anderson 44, Tinsley 44, Mitchell 40, Carter 40, Smyth 39, Jenkins 33, Rees 30, MacDonald 28, Pierce 28. Hender son 24, Harvey 22, Welsh 21, Saunders 20, Hughes 19, Patrick 18. Sells 14, McMillan 12, Johnston 10, Green 9, Rutley 8, Boag 2, Grace 1.
