Match 02
13th September 2009
Bideford (a)

Exeter City  LFC v Bideford Town LFC.

Sunday 13th September 2009

City took to the road for their second match of the season against Bideford Town Ladies. Having beaten Alphington Ladies 3-2 in their previous outing and City themselves in the North Moulton five-a-side tournament during pre-season, Bideford would be tough competition for the girls.

City set up with a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Hannah Cox up front and Kirsty Caunter sitting in just behind her. This game saw Gemma Ralph recalled to the starting line up, following a strong performance on the left wing in the previous match.

With left back Hannah Patel still out through injury, the defence re- shuffled moving Tamsin Braund to this position, with Jade Maryan and Kellie Hall in the centre half roles and Willow Adams recalled to right back. The girls started nervously and squandered several chances in the first twenty minutes. Bideford had opted to put five defenders at the back, which make it difficult for City going forward

Although City retained most of the possession during the first half, they were unable to convert any of the opportunities that were presented to them. The closest chance of the half came from a Hannah Cox pass, which Caunter placed just wide.

Ralph was replaced on the left by one of City's latest signings, Emma Jones (returning from injury) shortly before the half time due to illness. The girls set out for the second half, determined to get a result. They had been told by manager Steve Tully to 'get the ball down and play' rather than hitting long diagonal balls over the top as the Bideford defence were closing them down every time.

City's break came quickly when Siobhan Aslett was fouled just outside the Bideford penalty box. Wilkins' free kick was struck perfectly and on target, skimming the head of one of the Bideford defenders as it went in.

With a goal scored, tactics were changed and Kerry Hurley dropped back slightly from her position at centre midfield to sit just in front of the defence, closing the gap between City's midfield and the back four. City continued to push on, with great play down the left side from Jones. City nearly made it two shortly before the final whistle, when Hurley's corner was placed just wide by Cox.

The game ended 1-0, with manager Steve Tully laughing after the game, 'It's the sign of a good team when you don't play your best and still come away with three points!'
