Match 06
30th September 2012
Newquay (a)

NEWQUAY LFC 1 EXETER CITY LFC 3

City's Ladies faced the second of their local derbies on Sunday as they travelled to Newquay. This weekend saw a slight change in the line up from the previous week, with Natalie Shenton and Tamsin Tully returning to the squad from injury.

City's slow start to the game proved costly in the opening minutes of the game, allowing Newquay to open the scoring with a superb strike from the edge of the area. At half time a stern team talk from assistant manager Chad Gribble and manager Steve Tully prompted a dramatic change of play by the team. Within moments of the kick off City's centre half Katie Hine's perfectly placed pass put centre midfielder Leah Brooks clean through, for her to strike the ball home. City increased the pressure knowing that this game was theirs for the taking and peppered the Newquay goalmouth. City's second goal followed in style when a cross found Lola Garcia Sanchez but with her back to the goal. Her overhead kick flew past Newquay's keeper to put City ahead! Newquay battled hard to keep themselves in the game, but with City's keeper Maxine Coupe in top form, they never looked like scoring. City continued to raise their momentum and in the closing moments of the game, a run down the left from Shenton and resultant cross found Kirsty Caunter, who riffled the ball home.

Newquay 1-3 Exeter

Goals for Exeter
Leah Brooks, Lola Garcia Sanchez, Kirsty Caunter.

The final score meant that City have won both of their local derbies in as many weeks, against both Plymouth Argyle and Newquay!

Manager Steve Tully said of the team after the game: "To come back from behind showed the girls resilience and determination. "They were a different class for me in the second half, right the way through the team from Max in goal to the strikers. Lola's overhead goal was brilliant! If that was in the Premier League it would have been shown over and over!'
