Exeter Development v Yeovil Town

In their first match on the 23rd of October the team beat Yeovil Town 4-1 with goals from Marika Ghiglia (2), Rachel Gobley and Sam Burnham.

Both teams took 10 minutes to settle, but it quickly became clear that the Yeovil game plan was to play long direct passes to their forward players. The City girls, in contrast, started to show their short passing style with some quick and confident combination play in midfield combined with some quality delivery from wide areas. The back four coped well with Yeovil's direct style of play but still need to work on maintaining their line. Rachel Golby and Dani Garland proved to be a strong central midfield pairing that combined ball winning ability with good distribution. Goalkeeper, Beccy Rose showed good positioning and decision making throughout the game (apart from the slight aberration that led to the Yeovil goal). Hayley Worsley showed her ability to deliver quality balls into dangerous areas both from open play and dead balls. Marika Ghiglia opened the scoring for City after latching on to a Hayley Worsley cross. Further goals then came from a confident strike by Rachel Golby; a neat finish again from Marika Ghiglia after some good combination play on the edge of the box with Sophie-Lou Simpson; and Sam Burnham lashing home a loose ball at the back post.
Yeovil scored a consolation goal from a free-kick after a mix-up between Nat Volpini and Beccy Rose resulted in the keeper handling the ball outside of the box. An entertaining game with the City girls playing some attractive passing football.

30th October 2010

Gloucester 2-6 Exeter Development

Seven days later on the 30th of October they beat Gloucester City 6-2 away from home with goals from a hatrick by Sophie Lou-Simpson, two goals from Beth Wills and a fantastic header from captain Meg Griffiths.

Once again, City moved the ball well around the pitch with controlled possession. The back four kept a much better line and are starting to read and deal with the long ball more efficiently. Hayley Worsley continued to show her ability to deliver the ball with quality from wide areas and Nat Volpini and 14-year-old Jade Salt both showed great strength in defence plus confidence to play out from the back. Notable individual performances were put in by Simpson's strike partner Marika Ghiglia and the midfield duo of Dani Garland and Leah Rawlings. The City Goals came from a Sophie Lou Simpson hat-trick, a double from the impressive Beth Wills and a fantastic header from captain Meg Griffiths, Another great footballing display.
