On this day in:-
1947
Exeter City were looking forward to the new season, with the Express and Echo reporting as follows:- 'When Exeter City had their first ball practice in preparation for the new season it was so hot that the other side envied the 'torsos' of the men who played, which gleaned like Gods in the sun. Veterans and trainers Charlie Miller and Jimmy Gallagher joined in some really strenuous work and the team is getting down to real business with a will after the summer break. The practice match on Saturday will be a acclimatising get together, designed to reaccustom players to a full 90 minute game after their summer holiday. The Reds versus the Whites will give newcomers a chance to sample local conditions. Many of the retained men have been scattered to the ends of the Kingdom during the close season and they as well will benefit in a full scale trial in the Devonian atmosphere."
1954
The Grecians travelled to Crediton for a friendly and won 10-0, with goals from Bill Ellaway (4)Angus Mackay (2), Gerry Priestley (2) and Arnold MitchellIt was reported that a "big crowd' saw the game, the proceeds going towards the cost of the drainage improvements to the Crediton pitch. Meanwhile, City centre-forward Andy Donaldson entered hospital for observation, after becoming a victim of a chest infection. The player had complained of feeling unwell, and was admitted following x-rays. The problem was to hinder him. throughout the 1954-55 season and he only featured in a handful of matches.
- Marathon runner Jim Peters was first into the stadium in Vancouver, Canada during the British Empire games. It was a hot day, so hot that Peters found to his cost that the conditions simply took their toll. Within tantalising sight of the finish, he was reduced to crawling on all fours along the track before he collapsed in a heap, still short of the line and did not finish.
- Top of the pops was 'Cara Mia' sung by David Whitfield with the Mantovani Chorus and Orchestra.
1956
The Grecians Association set up a 'Ground Improvement Fund' for St James' Park, into which went a third of all their profitsThe other two thirds were to be handed over immediately to the Exeter City board of directors to be used in any manner they so wished. The previous season the Grecians Association donated £6,500 to the club which was spent on new signings and housing accommodation for the players.
- An enormous explosion of seven truck loads of dynamite rocked the immediate area and killed 1,200 in Columbia.
- Number one in the charts for the third week running was 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love' sung by Frankie Lymon.

1973
City manager John Newman called off the deal that would have brought winger Ken Wallace to the club from Hereford United. Newman was far from pleased as he had booked accommodation for the player in Exeter ready for him to move down, but then received a phone call from Hereford boss Colin Addison who said that the player was not interested anymore. Despite this setback, Wallace did in fact sign for Exeter a couple of weeks later.
- Peters and Lee were number one in the pop charts with with 'Welcome Home."
1980
Exeter City unveiled their three new apprentices, Byron Burte, Martin Finn and David Jones. Burte, from Birmingham was described by the local press as a midfield player with almost South American like skills. Finn, also from Birmingham, and another midfielder was set to join Aston Villa before deciding he stood a better chance of making the grade with a smaller club. Jones, a defender, had previously been an associate schoolboy with Plymouth Argyle.
- Top of the Pops for the second week running was Swedish super- group' Abba, with 'The Winner Takes All.'
1984
Defender Martyn Rogers' long lay- off with a toe injury looked as if it was finally coming to an end. Although he did not feature in the Exeter team the previous season due to the injury, he had been retained on a month to month contract in order to give him a chance to prove his fitness under the watchful eye of City coach Malcolm Musgrove. Manager Jim lley warned his players that he expected maximum effort from everyone who wore an Exeter City shirt that season. Unfortunately for lley, this did not prove to be the case as he was dismissed as manager eight months later as the team struggled in the Fourth Division.
- Frankie Goes To Hollywood topped the singles charts for the eighth week running with 'Two Tribes."
