Brave Pilgrims lose their grip on trophy
PLYMOUTH Pilgrims failed in their attempt to retain the Devon FA Women's Cup when they lost 3-1 to Elmore Eagles at Newton Abbot yesterday.
Elmore, from South West division three, had to soak up heavy pressure as Pilgrims continually pinned them back in the first half.
But it was the first division side who found themselves a goal down after 20 minutes as Rebecca Batten forced the ball home from close range during a furious goalmouth scramble.
Elmore gained confidence from the goal and the second half was a more even affair until Eagles increased their lead on the hour with a near post header from Samantha Cox.
Pilgrims replied five minutes later with a short corner from Donna Gage which was flicked on by Mandy Lawrence for skipper Mandy McCann to turn and fire into the top corner of the net from 15 yards.
Pilgrims surged forward in search of an caught the break 10 minutes from time as Lisa Clark broke clear to score with a low drive from the edge of the box and send the cup back to Elmore
