WELCOME TO ELMORE EAGLES
Elmore Eagles have surprised many onlookers this season with their appearance in three finals this month. Two weeks ago they won the Devon County Cup, beating today's opponents, Plymouth Pilgrims from Division One, by 3 goals to 1 in the final. Last week they beat old rivals Bath City 2-1 to take the Whitbread Division Three Cup and clinch the Division Three double and add to their silverware. They had already won the Division Three (South) title, having trailed Bath City for most of the season, and have now gained promotion for next season. Today they are the first team from outside of Division One to reach the final of the Pat Sowden
Elmore Eagles were founded in 1995 and this is their second season in the South West Women's Football League. Last season they finished in third place in Division Three (South) behind champions Barnstaple Town and runner's-up, today's opponents Bath City, on goal difference. They only missed out on the Championship and promotion to Division Two by two points, despite beating the eventual title winners, Barnstaple Town, twice. They were the only team to beat the champions and did so 4-3 at home and 1-0 away.
Elmore had to progress to today's final from the First Round. Back in September they beat AFC Clevedon 8-0 away. In Round 2 they took their first scalp from a higher division when they defeated Second Division Freeway 6-0, again away from home. In Round 3 they were confronted by First Division opposition for the first time when they were drawn at home to Cable Tel (Newport). Having suffered a 4-0 home defeat to Cable Tel in the First Round of UK Living Women's FA Challenge Cup earlier in the season, not many would have given them much chance to progress. Once again the pundits were proved wrong when they were successful by 4 goals to 2, after extra- time. Perhaps their best result on the road to this final was the 3-2 victory over Cardiff County in the semi-finals. A strong Cardiff side were firm favourites to reach the final of a competition that they have won before, but Elmore overturned the odds to come out on top.
Elmore play their home matches at Horsdon Park, Tiverton, the home of Screwfix Direct Premier League side Elmore. They are one of several teams in the South West Women's League who play at enclosed stadiums and can offer their opponents superb facilities.
Whether Elmore will be promoted to Division Two or straight into Division One, under the FA's re-structuring of women's football next season, remains to be seen. Either way they have earned their place in a higher level of football and will no doubt be eager to take on new challenges.
