Biographical Text

Liverpudlian James Henderson made a handful of appearances in Exeter City’s final Southern League campaign in 1919/20. Having signed from Bristol Rovers, he later played in South Wales.

Starting in Liverpool junior football with Egremont, he turned professional with Derby County in 1913 and was also on the books of Glossop and Liverpool before football was suspended for the duration of the Great War.

With football properly resuming in 1919, James spent the first-half of the new season with Bristol Rovers ahead of, after a short trial, making his Exeter City debut on Christmas Day 1919 in a Southern League fixture at Plymouth Argyle. Although he was to score three goals (against Southampton, Luton Town and Swansea Town) in six outings, he was released at the end of the season and - after briefly returning home to make a few reserve appearances for Everton - saw out his career in South Wales with Caerphilly Town and Penrhiwceiber.
