Hesmondhalgh, Tom

Bolton, Lancashire 1897

Biographical Text

Tom Hesmondhalgh, signed from Rochdale, played a solitary league game for Exeter City in 1920. He had previously been a professional with Bolton Wanderers.

A strongly built centre-forward, Tom played for Smithills Amateurs, Queen Street Mission and Eccles Borough before signing for Bolton Wanderers as a professional in 1914. After playing in military football during the Great War and turning out for Horwich RMI, he joined Rochdale in the summer of 1919 where he was a frequent scorer for the reserve team.

Tom moved to Exeter City, newly-elected to the Football League, in the summer of 1920 but appeared only once for the first team in a goalless draw at Watford in November 1920 and was released at the end of the season.
