Biographical Text

Thomas Hesmondhalgh, signed from Rochdale, played a solitary game for Exeter City in 1920. He had previously been a professional with Bolton Wanderers.

A strongly built centre-forward, Hesmondhalgh played for Smithills Amateurs of the Lancashire Amateur League before signing for Bolton Wanderers as a professional in 1914. After serving in the Great War and playing in military football, he joined Rochdale in the summer of 1919 where he was a frequent scorer for the reserve team.

He moved to Exeter City in the summer of 1920 but his goalscoring touch deserted him and he was to feature only once for the first team in a goalless draw at Watford in November 1920. He was released at the end of the season.
