Hill played for Exeter City in the Plymouth and District League before the club turned professional in 1908. Like several players of the time he was in the army. 

He made his debut in the final league encounter of 1905/06 against Green Waves (Plymouth) on 28 April 1906 and, stationed locally in the army, made another five appearances during 1906/07.
