Hyde played for Exeter City in the Plymouth and District League before the club turned professional in 1908.

A goalkeeper, he made his debut against the Royal Marines on 17 November 1906 and also played in the game at Gunnislake early in 1907/08. 

Serving in the Devonshire Regiment he was wounded during the early stages of the Great War and, at the invitation of the board, attended Exeter City’s game against Millwall in November 1914.
