26th November

On this day in:-

1949
Exeter City beat Millwall, away, 5-3 in the first round of the FA Cup. Exeter City's 5-3 victory at Millwall, however, was one of the most
surprising results of the day. The London club were unlucky as their goalkeeper, Hinton, was taken to hospital with concussion before the interval and their centre-forward, Constantine, fractured a shoulder later in the game. The referee pleased impartial observers by his handling of the match at New Cross, but not a section of the Millwall supporters, who were resentful of the award of a free-kick which led to the scoring of the City's fourth goal. Spectators attempted to invade the playing pitch when the teams and officials were leaving the field. Missiles were thrown, and Mr Meads left the arena under police protection. Exeter City broke one record and preserved another by winning to-day. They won at Millwall for the first time, and their record of never having lost a Cup match in London still stands.
