The Pony Cup
WFA Cup R1
PLYMOUTH PILGRIMS v EXETER LADIES
Report by Rod Hawker
In the first round of the Pony Cup (The Women's F.A. Cup) two of the best teams in the area were drawn in the first round. Exeter travelled to Plymouth to play the Pilgrims for the first time in two years. What a game that turned out to be. Although Exeter ended up losing and being knocked out of the Cup, who can complain when 8 goals are scored, one disallowed, and a penalty missed!
Exeter struggled in the first half and found it difficult to break through a well organised off side tactic, and before half time, rightback Vivienne Asher had to come off with a leg injury, and Helen Wackley replaced her in defence. It was the old story of Exeter pressing in numbers, while Plymouth took advantage with quick breaks down their right wing where their winger caused a lot of problems. Although never getting on equal terms, Exeter fought all the way.
Julie Trott's penalty in the second half was well save by the Plymouth keeper, when it looked as if Exeter would pull level. Then after conceding a further goal when our defence was really stretched, Ness Byrne pushed ball through to Trina Lake whose shot beat the keeper and everybody thought we were in it again. However, the referee decided someone had been off- side and we again missed the boat.
Throughout the second half it was a matter of could Exeter pull back the advantage Plymouth had gained in the first half, rather than could Plymouth hold on to their lead, and for most of the half Plymouth always managed to break away and score just when we would get on top. The game ended with everyone wondering whether Exeter or Plymouth would score more, and if anyone has forgotten what it is like to see two teams go out and play attacking football in the same match I can only suggest they come and watch our League encounters with Plymouth.
A final word from the Pilgrims Manager, who did ask that he be quoted in saying that the game had been the toughest Cup match the Pilgrims had played. It is not our ticket into the second round - but at least Plymouth know what to expect in the League! I know he will be reading a copy of this so perhaps I can reassure him that in the League we will make it just a little harder to put five goals on us again!
Final Score
Plymouth Pilgrims 5-3 Exeter Ladies
