HEARTBREAK AGAIN FOR LADIES
Exeter Rangers LFC 2 Clevedon Town LFC 2
(Exeter go through after penalties)
Report from the Clevedon Mercury
Last season Town suffered the heartbreak of a cup exit after extra time against Swansea but this result was even harder to bear, defeat coming at the same stage, this time after a penalty shoot out. After last week's home defeat against the same side Deb Rollason dropped back to the heart of the defence and there were a further number of positional changes in the line up. These resulted in Clevedon producing some excellent football after they had fallen behind after just seven min utes and from this point they enjoyed the majority of the possession. They were back on terms in the thirty fifth minute courtesy of a fine strike from Stella Bowier.
Exeter enjoyed a spell of superiority for a while after the interval but Clevedon soon regained the initiative although they were unable to force the winner they had worked so hard to find.
Extra time began and the first half produced the first booking in the club's 57 match history, Stella Legg being pulled up for a clumsy challenge. A sloppy goal seemed to have sunk Town but from the restart a spectacular shot from Alli Wright brought the sides level once again.
'Keeper Sue Quinn pulled of a breathtaking save and at the other end Deb Rollason had a shot cleared of the line but there were no fur- ther goals and the penalty shoot out began.
After five kicks each it was 3-3 and from then it was sudden death with the home side clinching it when Stella Bowler suffered the agony of seeing her kick clear the bar.
Town gave their all and were a credit to themselves and their manager Nick Ball. Lisa Perry and Lou Broderick battled tirelessly in midfield but it was Helen Anderson who was nominated as best player by the Exeter manager.
