Biographical Text

Starting his career with Plymouth Argyle, Exeter-born Ben Purrington moved on to Rotherham United and Charlton Athletic before joining his hometown club from Ross County at the age of twenty-seven in January 2024. His younger brother Tom also commenced his career at Home Park and, after a spell with Tiverton Town, was playing for Plymouth Parkway when Ben joined the Grecians.

After attending St James High School in Exeter, and playing for both Exeter Schools and Devon Schools, Ben became a Plymouth Argyle scholar/trainee in 2012. Part of Argyle's academy from the age of nine, he signed a full professional contract in May 2013 and made his first-team debut in the league game against Oxford United on Boxing Day 2013. Soon establishing himself as part of the first-team squad, Ben made a total of 14 league and cup appearances during the remainder of the 2013/14 season followed by 9 in 2014/15 and 16 in 2015/16. Playing regularly during the first half of 2016/17, Ben totalled 64 first-team appearances (52 in the league plus one play-off) by the time of his £300,000 January 2017 transfer to Rotherham United.

Spending two-and-a half seasons with the South Yorkshire club, Ben had 22 first-team outings for the Millers and a further 30 when on loan with AFC Wimbledon together with another 21 during his loan stint with Charlton Athletic towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Ben's form at the Valley was sufficient to win him a permanent contract with Charlton in July 2019 and he went on to make an additional 94 league and cup appearances until departing the club at the end of the 2021/22 season. Signing next for Ross County, Ben suffered a number of injuries during his first season in the Highlands but was playing first-team football again when he moved to Exeter City in January 2024 when he had accumulated around 260 league and cup appearances for his various clubs whilst scoring on thirteen occasions (with his most notable strike coming in Charlton's 2019 play-off final victory over Sunderland).

On agreeing to join Exeter City for an 'undisclosed fee', Ben signed an initial eighteen-month contract and made his debut as a second-half substitute at Blackpool on 13 January 2024. He scored his first goal for the Grecians against his former club Charlton Athletic on 29 March 2024 as he went on to feature in a dozen league games during what remained of the season.
