Youth Team

Our Under 17s will once again be competing in the Devon and Exeter League and the under 18s in the SWEB South West Counties Youth League. Both competitions are thriving, with interest shown in the form of sponsorship and applications to join the respective leagues.

We will be facing some early starts on Sunday morning this season with the likes of Launceston and Barnstaple Town having entered teams in the Devon and Exeter Youth League. As you will be aware we also have a number of associate schoolboys on our books and they too will face a programme of friendly matches during the coming months, as well as getting the opportunity to feature at under 17 level. We are particularly pleased at the way young players have been progressing from associate schoolboy to trainee and then on to young professionals. We now have an excellent youth scheme in place, although it has taken a terrific amount of work, and will continue to do so, if we are to maintain the sort of standards we have now set ourselves.

As always I thank everyone who are connected with the youth scheme, whether they are sponsors or help out on matchdays or during the week. All play a very significant part. are now individually sponsored. A big thank you to those who have come forward and sponsored the players in this way.

You will also be aware that the youth scheme operates on a limited budget, so, the more sponsorship that we can attract, the bigger the scheme and this can only be of obvious benefit to Exeter City in future years.

I am always pleased to talk to anyone with sponsorship ideas and can be contacted at the Cat and Fiddle Training Ground. Alternatively, give our Commercial Manager, Keith Hartshorn a ring on 01392 214422. Since my last notes we have played a couple of games (last week we were due to play friendly fixtures whilst in Dorset) against Lympstone and St Blazey.

The game at Lympstone was to mark that club's return to their former pitch at the Cliff Field and we were delighted to be part of their celebrations.

The game attracted a large crowd, probably around 450 to 500 and the whole occasion was a credit to everyone who organised the evening. Warren Waugh hit a hat-trick as we won won 11-1, and there were doubles for Barry McConnell and Luke Vinnicombe. The other goals came from Chris Holloway, Scott Walker, Stephen Hensor and Steve Kent.

This was first time Lympstone had played at the ground for six years and I hope that our contribution will go some way towards helping them reestablish themselves back in the village.

It was nice to see former Grecian, Stan Challis, now 81-years young, at the game. Stan played for the City in the mid 1940s and once lived in Lympstone before moving to his

NEW CITY TRAINEES

A number of new trainees have joined the Club during the summer months, some of whom have previously been associate schoolboys.

SIMON BAINES - Formerly with Yeovil Town, this Blandford Forum based defender joins as a second year trainee.

ADAM BUTTERWORTH - striker or midfielder from Paignton. Scored 32 goals for City's Under 17 last season.

GLENN CRONIN - 16-year old midfielder from Ballyfermot. Glenn was among a group of Dublin based players who came to Exeter for a trial last Easter.

STEPHEN HENSOR - utility player who attended St Peter's School, Exeter. Played regularly for the Under-17s last season.

RUSSELL JEE - Cullompton based left wing- back and son of former Wellington and Elmore defender Martin Jee. Regular member of the successful Devon Schools U16s team.

STEVEN KENT - Based in Street, Somerset. Former Yeovil Town midfielder who turned down an offer from the Conference club. NEIL POINTING - right wing-back from Exeter, who has previously played for our Under 17 team. Signed as an associate schoolboy, whilst attending St Peters High School, Exeter.

The newcomers link up with second year trainee's, GAVIN COWAN, PETE SMITH, SHAUN WATTS and WARREN WAUGH.

GAVIN COWAN - Defender who was born in Hanover, Germany. Was plagued with injury and illness last season which hampered his progress, however, he is expected to make big strides this term. PETE SMITH - a utility player from Liverpool. Joined the club on the YT scheme at the start of the 1997-98 season.

SHAUN WATTS a midfielder from Exeter. Has enormous potential and excellent ability.

WARREN WAUGH - had a number of injury problems last season, but still scored goals for both the Under 17s and 18s. Strong front runner who comes from Willesden, London.

Commercial
We start the new season with a team new sponsor - The Exeter Friendly Society - and start what is to be hoped a fruitful partnership. Commenting, Robin Payne, General Manager - Business Development at the Society, said: "It's great to be associated with a football club, which provides interest and enjoyment for so many and to support a long established national league team such as Exeter City."

Another new venture for the Club this season is the introduction of an exclusive matchday package for supporters who are either season or grandstand ticket holders. You now have the opportunity to enjoy the lounge facilities on match days, the offer including, matchday programme, pre-match complimentary buffet, tea or coffee at half- time and use of the bar. The cost of this superb offer is just £8 per person per game, or should you wish to save over £1 a match, £150 for all 23 league matches if purchased with your season ticket
