Biographical Text
One-time Manchester City youth player Ed Francis joined Exeter City from Gateshead in 2024. He had also played for Harrogate Town and Notts County as well as representing England at youth level when with Manchester City and England 'C' during his time with Gateshead.
Ed was involved with Manchester City from the age of six and, having appeared for England at under-16 level, became a scholar/trainee in 2016. Winning further caps at under-17, under-18 and under-19 level he became a full-time professional in the summer of 2018 but, after a loan spell with Almere City in the Netherlands, moved on to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2019 without ever having made the Manchester City first-team.
Again not featuring in the first-team, but remaining at Molineux for just under two years and having played for Swiss team Grasshoppers on loan, Ed joined Harrogate Town in December 2020 where he stayed for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign making 20 league appearances (scoring once) before agreeing terms with Notts County, then of the National League, in July 2021. Spending two seasons at Meadow Lane he made 43 appearances (two goals) in all competitions - 33 games in the first season; 10 in the second.
Released after County's promotion to the Football League in 2023, Ed remained in the National League with Gateshead for whom he had already played on loan during 2022/23. Quickly establishing himself back at the Tyneside club he notched up in excess of 40 league and cup appearances during 2023/24 - including a winning Wembley appearance in the FA Trophy against Solihull Borough - before being given another chance in the Football League with Exeter City in July 2024 at the age of twenty-four.
Starting the new season in the team, he was one of six players making a first league start for City in the 1-0 win over Rotherham United on 10 August 2024 and soon scored his first goal for the club against Swindon Town in the EFL Trophy on 3 Spetember 2024 followed by a goal in the league at Blackpool eleven days later.
