Simon Carter moved from contributing to an Exeter City fanzine to eventually reporting on the club for the local press. He also wrote a book about his time as a supporter.

Having watched his first City game as a ten-year-old in 1979, Simon became known for his work with Exe Directory - a Grecians’ fanzine of the 1980s and 1990s - when he was a journalism student in Cardiff.

After working on other papers he was a sports reporter with the Express and Echo between 1995 and 1999 before later becoming sports editor of the Southern Daily Echo in Southampton. In 2016 he wrote a book about his time as a supporter entitled Gus Honeybun... Your Boys Took One Hell of a Beating: A Love Affair in the Lower Leagues.

During his journalism career he also spent time on the Western Gazette, Derby Evening Telegraph Bristol Evening Post and The News (Portsmouth).
