Read, Jasmine
Exeter City Women completed their first signing of the summer in July 2024, with the arrival of Goalkeeper Jasmine Read from Plymouth Argyle.
Read began her career at Yeovil Town, debuting for the Somerset side before their transition to Bridgwater United. With Read just starting out her career in Women’s football, she would provide back up to United’s Bethany-May Howard, a goalkeeper who now plays her football for Southampton FC in the Barclays Championship, during the start of the 2020/21 campaign.
In search of first team football to enhance her development, Read moved south to Plymouth Argyle later that season, proving a safe pair of hands as the Greens secured their position in the Southern Premier with a strong end to the campaign.
Read’s first full season as a Pilgrim brought due reward, Argyle securing safety with a final day win over MK Dons. The talented keeper picked up the Young Player of the Season award to go alongside her Community Player of the Year Award.
Read started on 21 occasions for Argyle last season, including in the Greens’ success at the Exwick Sports Hub in the League Cup, before bringing her time in green and white to an end this summer.
Following her departure from Argyle, Grecians Manager Abbie Britton moved swiftly to add to the goalkeeping options at Exeter City. With over 50 appearances in tier three, Read will add competition to City number one Abbi Bond alongside teenage talent Liv Giles.
“We are pleased to have Jas with us for the new season. I spoke with Geo (Goalkeeping Coach, George Hamill) about adding strength and competition to our goalkeeping stable for the new season and bringing in Jas was a good opportunity to do just that,” Britton said.
September 2021 was the last time the Grecians fielded a team without Bond between the posts - Megan Lightfoot the Goalkeeper starting that day - and with 84 consecutive appearances for City she will be tough to dislodge, but Read’s arrival with provide strong competition for the upcoming season in the Southern Premier Division.
Jasmine made her debut playing for the reserves, in a friendly at St Austell on the 28th July 2024. In September 2024 Torquay United "were delighted to secure Jasmine Read on loan from Exeter City WFC. She comes with tier 3 experience, having previously played for Plymouth Argyle One of the best young keepers around, fantastic with the ball at her feet"
